You receive an email from the Bernie Sanders campaign asking you to donate. Click on the link and you'll be redirected to a website called ActBlue, a powerful donations platform that is changing the way political fundraising is handled by liberals.

Since its 2004 launch, the Massachusetts-based organization has helped over 11,000 Democratic campaigns and progressive organizations raise upwards of $900 million. This election cycle, it has already seen record levels of donations, even though Election Day is still months away. On December 31, ActBlue received more than 150,000 contributions, marking its biggest donor day ever and surpassing the record set at the end of the previous quarter on September 30. The average contribution size in 2015: about $35.

"This is now how you fundraise on the left, you build these small-dollar communities," said Erin Hill, executive director of ActBlue.

For the Sanders campaign, ActBlue has been a particularly powerful partner. Go to the group's website and you will see the Sanders campaign featured. ActBlue promotes the most popular causes, determined by an algorithm -- and Sanders is the top fund-getter (Hill said the senator's campaign uses the platform for all of its small-dollar online fundraising). End Citizens United and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee are among the most popular recipients as well.
