Related: About this forumWill Hillary protect Social Security
Just as we were shocked to see Obama put Social Security "On the Table" is Hillary already signaling "Its a Done Deal" supporting Paul Ryan's plan ?In the Democratic debate in Las Vegas last week, presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was asked by CNNs Dana Bash whether she supported Bernie Sanderss plan to expand Social Security. She didnt give the clearest answer: Well, I fully support Social Security and the most important fight were going to have is defending it against continuing Republican efforts to privatize it, she responded, in part. She didnt say yes. Instead, she said that she favored increasing benefits for the poorest people in the program.
That specific phrase, which is similar to Donald Trumps stated position on the matter, worried some who want to protect Social Security. Their concern is that any deal that increases benefits for the poorest retirees will also involve cutting benefits for the middle classand they fear the political consequences of doing so.
A plan like that is currently on the table, though Clinton is unlikely to support it. Its being proposed by Representative Paul Ryan, who chairs the House Ways and Means Committee, and its claimed to protect the poorest recipients from cuts. Ryans proposal is a recycled version of an older plan, originally put forward by George W. Bushs administration, that would have reduced benefits for the upper 70 percent of earners and maintained them for the bottom 30 percent. In 2010, when Ryan first proposed this plan, the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities concluded that it would produce a system in which Social Security is very unattractive to affluent people.
So while Clinton has not yet put forward a plan to keep Social Security solvent and equitable, the choices she has are limited and well defined.

Right now, the Republicans seem to be in favor of dumping the whole program, not just privatizing it.

(19,537 posts)... when Bernie responded to a callers' concern about Obama negotiating cuts to social security that perhaps someone should primary him to get some discussion in a primary then on whether that should be done or not. Apparently Hillary's campaign had more of a problem with Bernie's thoughts on primarying Obama, making it sound like that was a big orchestrated plan on his part.
Well, given that she seems to think that was more of a problem than Obama's threats to cut social security, maybe we should also be allowed to interpret those comments and her campaigns reaction to it that she felt Obama should be protected in wanting to cut social security and therefore would be willing and perhaps even want to cut social security herself. The speculation game can be played both ways if they want to start it!!!
