I was already a Thom Hartmann fan at the time of Bernie's amazing filibuster; at one point, he read portions from one of Thom's books. He is indeed a modern day Mr. Smith. I believe Thom sat in the Senate chambers and watched him for part of it but am not sure if the man in the back of the clip is Thom.
