Related: About this forumSouth Carolina Lawmaker SWITCHES Sides to ENDORSE Bernie Sanders

The lawyer for the family of Walter L. Scott, who was fatally shot by a police officer in South Carolina, is withdrawing his support from Hillary Clinton and endorsing Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont on Monday afternoon.
The lawyer, State Representative Justin T. Bamberg of South Carolina, said he is switching sides because he believes Mrs. Clinton embodies establishment politics, while Mr. Sanders offers a bolder platform that will improve the lives of people in the South and across the country. The endorsement could help Mr. Sanders as he tries to win more support from black voters especially in South Carolina in the series of southern states that hold contests after Iowa and New Hampshire, where he is well positioned.
In April in North Charleston, a police officer, Michael T. Slager, fatally shot Mr. Scott, 50, as he ran from the officer. Video of the shooting went viral and a grand jury in June indicted Mr. Slager on a murder charge. Mr. Bamberg represents Mr. Scotts four children, two brothers, as well as his mother and father. The lawmaker said the family has not endorsed a presidential candidate, but Mr. Bamberg said he has spoken with several other South Carolina lawmakers about possibly supporting Mr. Sanders. Symone Sanders, a spokeswoman for Mr. Sanderss campaign, said she and other staff members are trying to persuade other officials to endorse Mr. Sanders. She said the campaign plans to enlist the help of Mr. Bamberg to make their case to voters to coalesce around the Vermont senator.

Good to see that as people get to know Bernie, they join the parade. If it wasn't for name recognition, Hillary wouldn't have a chance. She'd be polling O'M numbers.

I say, no more "status quo".

(19,326 posts)I love this!! Because it's a very valuable endorsement in it's own right AND, having switched
from Clinton to Sanders is even better, because it's emblematic of how the more people learn
about Bernie, the more support he gets,
Plus, the timing couldn't be better, with SC primary coming up after Iowa and NH.
Great news indeed!

(7,231 posts)I guess it shows just how much momentum Sanders has been building.
My guess is that the number of changed endorsements will go the way of Sanders' polling numbers: up, up, and further up, with no plateau in sight.

(368 posts)This is the Clinton campaign's worst nightmare. It will become more and more apparent with candidate supports them. The same man who has been fighting for equal justice since the 60s. The word is getting out in the A.A. community not only in South Carolina, but across the country. Once this happens it will be the beginning of the end for Clinton.

(10,056 posts)That 538 can make up it's own grading scale based on the political elites' endorsments?
This chart doesn't even include local/state endorsements. How are those 'graded?'
And I would point this out, oh tired one:
Endorsements arent a foolproof predictor. In 2008 , more Democrats initially endorsed Hillary Clinton than Barack Obama (although Obama had some support). Still, a steady flow of endorsements for Obama after his early successes in states like Iowa and South Carolina helped to signal that he was an acceptable choice among party elites and presaged his success in other states.

(267 posts)You are splitting hairs when one side is beating the other my more than a order of magnitude.
And if you want to compare this year to 2008... Where's Edwards? It was a three-way race going into Iowa, where it is a two-horse race this time around.
Additionally, Obama was in the lead in the polls at this point in 2008.
"And I would point this out, oh tired one:

THEN WHY THE FUCK DO BERNIE SANDERS FANS KEEP BRINGING THEM UP?

(179,822 posts)I am amused by Sanders supporters who want to talk about endorsement. Nate Silver's 538 website is keeping track of the endorsements that count http://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2016-endorsement-primary/
Hillary Clinton 459
Bernie Sanders 2
Martin O'Malley 1
Before any votes are cast, presidential candidates compete for the support of influential members of their party, especially elected officials like U.S. representatives, senators and governors. During the period known as the invisible primary, these party elites seek to coalesce around the candidates they find most acceptable as their partys nominee. Over the past few decades, when these elites have reached a consensus on the best candidate, rank-and-file voters have usually followed.
Of course, not all endorsements are equally valuable. We use a simple weighting system: 10 points for governors, 5 points for U.S. senators and 1 point for U.S. representatives (there are roughly five times as many representatives as senators and 10 times as many representatives as governors).
These are the endorsements that will matter
