~snip~
The campaign is beset by four woes that dont seem to have any quick remedy. The only way forward for the Democratic front-runner is to hunker down, slog it out and win ugly. Since malaise is an overused word in politics, Ill categorize Clintons campaign as desultory or, lacking a plan or enthusiasm. Clintons four problems are obvious: Her performance as a candidate, her opponents viability, a growing scandal that could lead to the indictment of the former first lady and possibly a few of her closest aides, and the rejection of her legitimacy as a feminist leader.
First, her performance as a candidate is weak and not getting stronger. Nothing about her is fresh, exciting or appealing. President Obama called it early she just doesnt have that new-car smell. Clintons style is stuck in the 80s, when message discipline was all about delivering talking points no matter what. Sticking to the script was considered artful. Repeating yourself and having a high word count but low content was considered clever. Those days are over. Either Clinton doesnt know that or she cant change her style. To watch her on TV can be toe-curling. To listen to her rehearsed lines, and, recently, to hear her force Obamas name into her answers is so contrived it lends itself to parody for SNL.
Clintons second problem is the viability of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.). Among the things I have gotten wrong so far in the 2016 cycle is the fact that Sanders has people who are affirmatively supporting him. I thought he would be the gadfly candidate the anti-Clinton candidate and nothing more. Instead, he is building a legitimate following. It not only says something about the Democratic Partys move to the left, but it also says something about him as a candidate that I did not anticipate. He seems to be getting better as a candidate, while Clinton seems to have plateaued. The emotional appeal of Sanders is vividly entrenched within the Democratic Party and is forcing Clinton to limp to the left, which will make it harder for her during the general election if she is the Democrats eventual nominee. The excitement surrounding Sanders is only making Clinton look even more stale.
Third, Clintons email scandal has receded in the news, but its growing more dangerous every day. It is an iceberg that cannot be avoided. As I always say, in politics, being innocent is only an advantage, and likewise, being guilty is only a disadvantage. Neither is necessarily determinative. But it appears that Clinton mishandled classified information, and that she didnt do it alone. Others on her staff appear to have been part of a regular practice of sending now-classified information over Clintons secret server located at her home in New York. Legal experts around town that I have spoken to are matter-of-fact about this prima facie case. There is no question among the experts I talked to about whether she is guilty; there is only a question of whether the Justice Department will indict, slow-walk the case or stiff-arm the FBI. And you routinely hear that the frustrated FBI is not going to be willing to go quietly in the face of the clear evidence it has collected.
And finally, if Donald Trump has done one good thing for the American body politic, it is how he has stepped on Clintons hypocritical, sanctimonious effort to present herself as a feminist icon. While other Republicans are mostly intimidated about bringing up her role in enabling Bill Clintons harassment of women and destroying his victims, Trump doesnt play along, and the inconvenient truth of what he says about her actions and hypocrisy has hobbled her effort to create a feminist wave of support. Some of the usual suspects on the left mumble about her leadership on womens issues, but younger voters arent buying it.

(7,231 posts)Break denied, as far as I'm concerned.
If she cannot win the primaries against a civil and courteous opponent like Sanders, she certainly won't win the GE against the unrelenting GOP garbage-peddlers.

(7,865 posts)I only solidly agree with the first one. The second I am somewhat in agreement with because I always considered Sanders legit. The third and fourth are highly questionable in my mind.

(14,923 posts)...on number four, Trump has already neutralized Hillary. Trump recently called Megyn Kelly a bimbo and lightweight.....As a defender of women's issues, did Hillary come to Megan's defense and call out Trump's sexist comments? NO. Will Hillary respond to Trump's sexist remarks? I doubt it....she has been neutralized by Trump's warning of 'not to go there' with him.......I could be very wrong on this
Fair point.
Michael Moore stood up for her instead... which was basically putting her down.

(14,923 posts)I would be jumping all over Trump's sexist comment......Bernie doesn't fear Trump's threats and would gain favor with many women for calling out Trump.
Can Hillary do the same without unleashing the Trump Kraken?....I doubt it.

From Wikipedia -
BGR Group is a lobbying firm based in Washington DC, three blocks from the White House, and also has an office in London.[1] The firm was founded in 1991 by Ed Rogers and Haley Barbour.[2]
In 2013 the firm was paid $13.7 million for lobbying and its three largest clients were the Republic of India, Chevron Corp. and the State of Kazakhstan.[3] The firm employs various former political figures including Ambassador Kurt Volker, Jeffrey Birnbaum, and Gov. Haley Barbour.[4] Rick Kessler, a lobbyist working for BGR Group was running for a seat in the Maryland House of Delegates in May, 2014.[5]
In 2014 Huffington Post reported that BGR Group was "at the center of [a] lobbyist network" supporting Republican Senator Thad Cochran, while he fought a tight primary election race against Tea Party candidate, Chris McDaniel.[6]

(382 posts)"Ed Rogers is a contributor to the PostPartisan blog, a political consultant and a veteran of the White House and several national campaigns. He is the chairman of the lobbying and communications firm BGR Group, which he founded with former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour in 1991."
This story would be about Senator Sanders if the Republicans thought he had a chance to win. Nate Silver gives the Senator only about a 26% chance of winning in Iowa, which is, you have to admit, his demographic heaven.
But, carry on pasting the Republican-inspired talking points on democraticunderground. It only makes her stronger.

(14,923 posts)Hillary Clinton resisted (through denials) and being upfront with the public about her server and further mocked reporters who questioned her erased server as being 'wiped with a cloth'..........but the FBI, for some reason, are still investigating her server breach while an employee has already pled the 5th.
We are in the middle of a presidential primary and this FBI investigation is still ongoing......why haven't they wrapped this up and submitted their findings or non-findings? Is damaging information being leaked to republicans by those close to the investigation?

(31,935 posts)Hillary fans acted as if I had written it myself or was part of some right wing conspiracy (oh, THE IRONY), and went on the attack. Pitiful; attacking the messenger instead of countering the message point by point? That's when you know that a nerve has been struck, and they have no substantial answers.
