2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWashington Post Poll-- America MOST Comfortable With President Bernie Sanders
The Washington Post/ABC asked who makes you anxious? who makes you feel comfortable? and now has released the results.
Trump scares us most: 69% say the thought of President Trump makes them somewhat or very anxious.
Next, Hilary, with 51%. Then, Cruz and Rubio. At 43%, Bernie Sanders makes us least anxious.
Which is to say, we are comfortable with him: a 57% majority is either somewhat or very comfortable with the idea of President Sanders, more than any other candidate.
Go look at the story. The details are illuminating, reminding us both of what a weird, small, insular cult the Republican party has become, and of the growing power of the group called Independent, from which Bernie has emerged.
Among Democratic hopefuls, 51 percent of Americans say they are anxious about Hillary Clinton becoming president, while 43 percent are similarly concerned about Bernie Sanders in the White House. Sanders is the only candidate tested in the poll for whom a plurality -- 50 percent -- says they feel comfortable with as president. (Expect the Sanders campaign to push this number as they make their case that the democratic socialist is electable.)
Despite those tepid ratings, anxiety surrounding a Trump presidency exceeds all candidates by a wide margin, with the gap concentrated with intense concerns. The 51 percent who feel "very" anxious about Trump is significantly higher than Clinton (35 percent), Cruz (26), Sanders (24) or Rubio (18).

(2,510 posts)Heh. NOT.
But yeah, Cruz, that nutjob?
Recent Gerneral Election matchups also show Hillary losing to Cruz.
LOSING?!
They shouldn't even be close....
Just proves what bad shape Hillary is really in with this campaign.

the TRUTH is setting us free.
Bernie Sanders timing couldn't be any better. Surf's up, and he's hanging ten.

(1,250 posts)I wrote an explanation here recently.
The truth is if we didn't elect Obama, we wouldn't have Bernie as President
Obama's election shifted the conversation.
Even if he didn't live up to his promise, his existence in that office has shifted the political structure.
Bernie would be nowhere NEAR this close in 2004 & 2008.
The man outright called himself a Socialist & it's not scaring people anymore.
It took Obama in office for that reality to happen.
And even Obama's failures set the stage for a Bernie Sanders.
His half-heartedness & half-powered approaches made us want someone full-hearted & full-powered even more.
What Obama's Campaigns were supposed to be, Sanders' Presidency WILL be.
Salon wrote in 2008 about Obama being the start of a new political age.
Obama and the dawn of the Fourth Republic
That article says that for the next 3 1/2 decades that this country is gonna be on a Progressive bent.
The Republican coalition is breaking down.
The political parties are about to realign.
The political parties ALWAYS shift because of Black people.
I wrote about THAT in a post called A long story about The Southern Strategy.
A Black President has just started another shift that Bernie Sanders will further develop.
After Bernie's done with 'em, there won't BE a Republican Party anymore.
Just waiting for Texas to finish turning. Won't be much longer now.
Obama has disappointed there's no doubt about that but he STILL made a difference in this political structure.
Because of him we can now have a Bernie Sanders as President.
And no matter how much the Clinton News Network & any of the Trump propaganda by Fox & its friends is floated in the air, Bernie will BERN through that mist & make that move to 1600.
Even if Obama HIMSELF says that Hillary is his heir apparent, the true heir is Bernie Sanders.
Can't wait for Bernie to rip the cockatoo feathers off the head of Trump!

(58,785 posts)Agree well enough with everything but the true heir bit, but Bernie would be an heir.
An enormous contribution to liberal progressivism is that Bernie absolutely has revealed real demand for stronger-left solutions than was previously realized. Which is to say, he revealed a stronger mandate from the voters and consequent power for change than anyone realized we had.

(14,169 posts)We are now very wary of the Democratic candidate bearing platitudes and promises. And that includes Bernie! Or at least it should.
But at least Obama was a fairly new addition to the insider club in Washington, and among other things he wasn't there in time to cast the Iraq authorization vote. (And looking back in hindsight, now that we know just how pragmatic and opportunistic a politician he really is, I would not be surprised if he was there to have voted alongside Hillary to give the laughing chimp his war toys.) He did not have the baggage that Hillary must drag around, baggage that offends both sides of voters. And even though some of it is total bunk, its the perception that counts.
But when we watch a candidate change her positions to appeal to the liberal base in the last months, while being financed by corporate elites in the backroom, alarm bells start ringing. We have seen this movie before and we know how it ends.
Thanks Obama

(41,600 posts)I trust Bernie with my life. I know he's telling the truth. I know he means what he says. He's nit a man who would knowingly lie.
"We are now very wary of the Democratic candidate bearing platitudes and promises. And that includes Bernie! Or at least it should"
Bernie Sanders has said the same things for the last 45 years. He hasn't had to "evolve" on anything.
Granted, the useless Repub Congress will do everything in their power to stop him from doing anything he wants to do (no doubt being helped by the Third Way Dems), but that's where the Political Revolution" comes into play. We The People continue to rise up and vote their sorry asses out of Congress and vote PROGRESSIVES IN INSTEAD.
We have a new day coming. A new government and a much better, more gracious and FAIR country is on the horizon.

(14,169 posts)I guess I have just become very cynical after going through the high of that monumental acceptance speech by Obama overlooking thousands declaring WE are the hope and change he was talking about. And it didn't hurt that he was replacing one of the most destructive bafoons that Americans have ever had to suffer through.
Then the blow after blow during his first year. And I'm not talking about the GOP's onslaught. I was expecting that. It was his transparent opportunism. His bull-headedness, not in pushing through Democratic principled legislation, not in grabbing the bull-horn and using his amazing gift of speaking, ...it was that he seemed almost hellbent on proving everyone wrong, that he would be a successful President, which meant passing legislation. He would prove to all the naysayers and actually be productive....which to him meant showing his cards and even capitulating before things were even begun. It became clearer and clearer as the years went by that he was NOT the second coming of MLK, he was just a simple opportunist politician that said what he had to say in order to corner Hillary as a part of the conservative Washington establishment in order to snag the nomination.
So I think we owe it to ourselves, if no one else, to be very very cautious before we go completely ga ga over a candidate for saying what we want to hear. I realize Bernie has a history to fall back on. And so that is also why I would tend to trust his sincerity. But what happens when he actually gets the power and authority and is inundated with top secret information from top "advisers" from the military, intelligence, and the financial industries, and also perhaps pressure to act in their wishes or......? Not necessarily a personal threat, but a political one, and who knows?..maybe I'm a pessimist but I think the world's .1% have orchestrated the world's economies and diplomatic situations in their favour for so long that they may persuade Bernie, as they perhaps did Obama, that he would be fighting a losing cause. So his choice is to become one of them, make friends with those high up in the food chain, set your family up for generations with favours cashed.....or become another "Carter". One and done and be ridiculed long after as a weak inefectual dreamer. Now this may all still happen and he would say, hopefully, that he doesn't care, and that he will push through his progressive agenda regardless because he knows it is best in the long term for the people. But do we really really know for 100%?

(233 posts)The WaPo editorial Board apparently doesn't like the polling results. They have lambasted Bernie Sanders in an editorial today.
It's pretty obvious that the ms media does not want a Sanders' presidency. For months they didn't cover his campaign, and now that it can't be ignored, they are trying to ruin it.

(7,865 posts)I don't know whether comfort level translates to active votes but it does indicate that he will be a lot less likely to turn out the base of his opposition.
But I guess if you combine this with the level of enthusiasm for the candidate and his overall positives then you end up with a good combination for success!

(13,570 posts)I love Bernie, but Dana Milbank is spot on. A self-declared socialist will not be able to win the general election. This poll means nothing because most aren't too familiar with Bernie and they haven't yet heard the ONSLAUGHT of "SOCIALISTCOMMUNISTSOCIALISTCOMMUNIST...!!!" That is going to be played day and night on the airwaves. Sorry, but the nutcases are going to nominate The Trump, and we are going to nominate Hillary and WIN because she is the most qualified person running on either side.
