Oh... I'll Catch Hell For This... (Even Though I Didn't Write It)

“Among both genders, Sanders has 57 percent backing in the 18-25 age group, according to the USA Today/Rock the Vote poll. That drops to 36 percent for those ages 26-34. For Clinton, the opposite is true. She gets 44 percent of those ages 26 to 34 and 25 percent of those 18-25.”

Sanders has become the cool uncle and Clinton has become the cold aunt.

means less than than of younger people? Here I thought everyone had one vote, no more no less.
Yet here we see the celebration of a capitalist cult of youth. Now, I know for a fact I am younger than the majority of DUers since I've seen plenty of polls where people select their ages. Yet somehow the age demographic is now deemed inferior, less than cool.

I don't vote or make any decisions in life based on what is cool. It's a vapid standard. I make decisions based on reason and what is right.

They key advantage to support among older voters is that they vote in far greater numbers.

There are many ways to look at voting demographics. Clinton's support is far higher among women and people of color. If only white men were allowed to vote, Sanders would fare far better. I guess being female or a person of color just isn't cool.

On the surface, of course you are correct.

One person, one vote... No matter what.

But this time it's interesting...

We have the future of our political system, and the future of the planet, inextricably linked.

And... most of us are soon to shuffle off this mortal coil.

And I wonder if maybe we might let them take the helm now.

After all... it is their future.

As I said... I wonder...

A movement that is about one man isn't a movement at all. It does nothing to advance any future goals or organization. In fact, it works against civic engagement by surrendering critical thinking in favor of reverence for a great man. No social movement or social revolution can be built upon such notions.

For me the question of equality is not difficult at all. It is a basic principle, core to my being: all human beings are equal. Any ideology, organization, person, or approach to politics that advances a hierarchy of human worth is wrong. It also exposes as empty rhetoric about equality. If people, as you suggest, believe some human beings to be inherently more valuable than others, they ought not pretend that their political goal is about promoting equality when it clearly is not.

What Sanders supporters and Americans at large should really ask is, when has any truly significant political change come about without the people becoming politically active and demanding it? Did civil rights legislation make it through Congress because LBJ and other old white men thought it was the right thing to do, or because millions of people decided to stand up and resist? Did the political reforms of the Progressive Era happen because Theodore Roosevelt believed in the virtues of democracy, or because the agrarian populists, labor organizations, and radical movements threatened the status quo? Would the right to vote have finally been given to women if not for several decades of organizing and campaigning?

Don't generalize too much, and don't count on your generalizations.

I attended a telephone party for Bernie this afternoon, and most of us were older women.

All depends.

The Nurses Union is for Bernie. Lots of older women.

"cold aunt" you felt compelled to post it twice. Yeah, we women worrying about our pesky "establishment" rights to be equal citizens is so uncool.

Unions, uncool. NARAL, uncool. The Human Rights Council, uncool. The mothers of Tamir Rice, Trayvon, Martin, and Eric Garner, uncool. Social justice and equality is just so uncool. Sexist slurs are totally cool. Racial profiling at campaign events, that's even cooler. http://www.citypages.com/news/racial-profiling-alleged-at-bernie-sanders-rally-in-st-paul-8000955

My guess is that you mean 'Human Rights Campaign' known as HRC, the DC based mainstream LGBT advocacy group.

Council:
http://www.ohchr.org/EN/Pages/Home.aspx

Campaign:
http://www.hrc.org/

The Human Rights Campaign is seen as uncool by many in the LGBT community for endorsing anti choice candidates, candidates opposed to affirmative action, for endorsing Republicans over pro gay Democrats. But most of all for betraying the transgender community by supporting the non-inclusive form of ENDA.
I'm strongly prochoice and the transgender community has my loyalty. I am also a Democrat. For those reasons the Human Rights Campaign does not get my financial support nor my presence. There are many other, older and more proactive LGBT support organizations in need of my time and money. Shelters for LGBT homeless youth for example are more important to me than Gala Dinners and hobnobbing with the DC elite.

the age bias in this election is easily explained. People my age (60+) are almost desperate to see a woman president in our lives. So the older one is, the more attractive Hillary might seem to be. At my age, I may not see the next election, time is promised to no one.

Frankly, I find it kind of disappointing that Hillary is the only woman up this cycle (no, Fiorina doesn't count). She is far from my favorite choice to be 'first woman' pres because I think there must be better options we are not getting to pick from.

Oh well. This go-around, I will swallow all of that and support Bernie through the primary season as the best option, gender neutral.

If Hillary wins the primary race, I will switch support to her, because the Repub options are simply unacceptable in just about every way I can think of.
