President Barack Obama leads Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in New Hampshire, and the two are locked in tight contests in Nevada and North Carolina, according to a new series of NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist polls released Thursday.

Obama is ahead of Romney, 51 percent to 44 percent, among likely voters in New Hampshire. He also edges Romney in Nevada and North Carolina, but within the margin of error.

In Nevada, Obama gets the support of 49 percent of likely voters and Romney gets 47 percent. In North Carolina, it’s Obama at 48 percent and Romney at 46 percent. (Among registered voters in all three states, Obama’s lead expands to 8 points in New Hampshire, 4 points in North Carolina, and a wider 7 points in Nevada.)

I find it very hard to believe voters can have such a low opinion of Mittens yet he be running so close. Doesn't add up to me.

5. Nevada underpolls Democrats

Obama's lead appeared considerably lower than his final margin of victory in 2008, and Harry Reid was regularly shown as even with Sharron Angle in the polls but beat her by a decent margin.

6. Yes, and what matters is the Turnout Machine

And thanks to Harry Reid and his deep roots in the state, the Democrats have a powerful turnout machine.

That's what helped give Reid the edge over Angle.

I spoke to one of Harry Reid's county Precinct Captains and they feel confident about winning this for Obama too.

7. Good numbers overall

NV looks close, but it looked a lot closer in '04 but in the end it was a blowout (like 12 points). While the Mormon population there is relatively high, I'm not super worried about the state.

Some of them are Democrats. (eg. Harry Reid).
