DES MOINES Hillary Clinton was so focused on winning Iowa Monday night that she didnt seem to notice that she hadnt really won.
Onstage at Drake University, she declared she was breathing a big sigh of relief.
But it wasnt clear why.
As she exited the podium, waving and shaking hands with supporters, her fate was still uncertain. But it was already obvious that it wasnt a victory. Not in the literal sense, because as of press time she was still neck and neck with her rival Bernie Sanders, at 49.8 to 49.6 percent. This race was never supposed to be close at all. She was supposed to sail to a win this time. The socialist Senator was supposed to be a blip. Hed won the expectations game.
I am excited about really getting into the debate with Sen. Sanders about this best way forward to fight for America, she said, unconvincingly.
While her supporters put on a brave face and enthusiastically talked up her progressive bona fides, Monday night was an unequivocal failure for Clinton. Now she will ride the wave of that failure into New Hampshire, a state where she trails Sanders by 18 points.
She didnt fail to win Iowa for lack of trying. In the final weeks before the caucuses, she threw everything she could at Sandershis varying positions on guns, his criticisms of President Obama (who won Iowa in 2008), and his desire to change Obamas signature healthcare bill.
She pleaded with Iowa to choose her experiencedomestic and internationalover his imagination. But his imagination prevailed, as Obamas did 2008.
Meanwhile, a few miles away from Hillarys fantasy victory party, Sanders was refusing to let her get away with controlling the narrative.
Tonight, while the results are still not known, it looks like we are in a virtual tie, he said. Hundreds of his supporters, packed into a ballroom at the airport Holiday Inn, cheeredfor a full 42 seconds.
Sanderss spokeswoman, Symone Sanders, said she didnt understand why Hillary seemed to be calling the race for herself. Theyve been up to tactics all weekend, she said. I dont know what theyre up to now.
Just outside the party, there was...

The next one is a primary so it's going to be harder to cheat.

(3,146 posts)I know I don't have to explain that his name is Bernie and we use the old exercise line of "feeling the Bern" when people come decide to support the senator from Vermont. Oh wait, I guess I did have to explain that.

Note: I didn't not say a word against Sanders. I criticized something said by **someone** here. And here y'all come. Kinda like everyone says.
Maybe y'all should take a cue from Bernie and stop taking shit so personal. It really wasn't that serious it was a mild observation. Doesn't require 5, 6, 7, 8 nuns scolding.
But please proceed to run the gamut.
Enjoy your day.

What this article failed to mention is How much money did Hillary Clinton spend on this walk-away-victory for her that was a dead even tie? And how much her PACs spent along with her billionaire friends like the Ricketts...

(12,882 posts)the conspiratorial efforts of that damned LIBERAL MEDIA that blessed her with virtually NO mention of Sanders until it was overly obvious he was gonna be a contender. There's NO dollar figure to the worth of such determined oversight!

(20,709 posts)still print these silly articles after that didn't actually happen. I wonder if they simply decided to publish the stuff they had written before Iowa actually happened, adding a sentence or two here and there to try and adapt the narrative to reality.
