Related: About this forumTHIS IS GOOD! footage of Hillary Clinton as Walmart board member.
This news story is from 2008, but just as relevant now.
Includes delicious footage that you probably have not seen of Hillary Clinton being a loyal board-member of Walmart.

She's such a phony.
GeoWilliam750
(2,555 posts)I think that this is really not much of an issue - deliberate or not.
Accents commonly shift depending on where you live, and with whom you are speaking. Having lived in a wide range of places over my life, my accent has been all over the place, and depends on whether I am in NY, Boston, the Midwest, the South, London, Europe, Singapore, or wherever. My accent migrates - usually it is completely unconscious.
Beyond that, it is often simply good manners to make other people feel comfortable. It is not lying or deception; it is getting one's message across in a way the listener has the best chance of understanding and accepting it, and it is usually easier to do when the listener does not regard the message as coming from "them".

Of the 2.4 billion dollars used to build the tower, 1.65 billion come from tax-exempt Liberty Bonds; the city and state made such a significant investment in hopes that Goldman Sachs will attract other major firms to Downtown.

We subsidize profitable business like crazy but we can't afford to pay a living wage or provide health CARE for citizens. Small businesses aren't able to get the kinds of subsidies that these large companies get. It's insane.

(35,166 posts)I know people support their candidates for a variety of reasons but when there is actual proof of something as egregious as this I do not understand them just blowing it off. It would certainly make me think at least and acknowledge that there is a problem
I have always wondered why getting to the top of things was so important to some people that they would sacrifice their moral values. Those kinds of people do not belong in office.
Maedhros
(10,007 posts)then the opposition will use their acknowledgement to attack their candidate.
We saw this behavior a lot with Obama's prosecution of the drone wars - double-tapping a signature strike on a wedding full of women and children was defended by staunch Democrats as regrettable, but necessary. I believe this is because they felt a deep need to defend Obama from right-wing criticism, so they defended him from all criticism.
I think a similar dynamic is in play for Hillary.

.should follow up on this history and track her votes while on the board. Did she vote for or against a raised wage? What did she ever say or vote for in relation to unionization?
Should speak to individuals who lost their downtown, their mom and pop stores, their local manufacturing.
Should talk about the number of towns and cities that have fought to keep WalMart from coming in.
Should talk about how WalMart will not give benefits, how their workers had (pre-ACA) no healthcare, and how they are not earning a living wage. Did she talk about health care while on that board?
Should talk about the workers in China and elsewhere and how much they earn that makes WalMart so cheap. And why the the average American needs prices to be this cheaphow it's an endless cycle of having struggling families here be part of what is oppressing workers elsewhere.
We need that piece of investigation, all drawn together in one place, now more than ever.

(9,870 posts)This really could work as an investigative journalism piece.
It's also the kind of thing the New Yorker or Vanity Fair does. Doesn't have to be just a progressive political publication.
dreamnightwind

(9,870 posts)There are other investigative stories to do too. Beginning with those speeches to Wall Street.
How often did high up Goldman Sachs folks meet with her subsequently?
What's paid to other speech-givers? Is this standard?
What is their roster of other speech-givers? Have they ever invited anyone from another perspective altogether?
It's so clearly how it's donehow influence is bought.
dreamnightwind
(4,775 posts)I wonder if there is a crowd-sourced investigative reporting infrastructure anywhere. If not, there should be.
zentrum
(9,870 posts)I have no idea how to track this down. I hear an app coming
..a political app for ordinary citizens.
dreamnightwind
(4,775 posts)This is a group of app developers that write apps to help Sanders win the election. It came out of the Bernie Redditt group.
The idea might be an idea of larger scope than electing Bernie, so I don't know if that is the right place to try. It is, however, a place where people would like the idea and would have the chops to write it.
Another possibility woud be to contact Darcy Burner. She is an excellent leftist activist who either does or used to write for Fire Dog Lake (I lost track of them, I think they changed their name to something else), ran for elected office herself, and she personally developed the app Buycott to assist consumers while shopping to avoid buying products made by people we don't believe in (such as Kochs).
I don't know if you really plan to run with this or not, just throwing it out there since you have some good ideas of investigative journalism tasks. Crowd-sourced investigations are not necessarily the way to do it, just one idea. Lee Fang at the Intercept is a great investigative journalist who is actively tracking Clinton campaign shenanigans.
Have a good one.

Or something.
She is progressive, but pragmatic and if you weren't all about unicorns you would see it's inevitable that the Walmart family will keep getting richer at the expense of their workers. No amount of idealism will change that. It was therefore practical for her to help it along.
