Related: About this forumRyan Tells Retired Seniors To Get A Job So They Are "Good Taxpayers" In Response To Question
Ryan was asked by a rally attendee who was no doubt concerned about all those people that Romney referred to who did not pay taxes whether there is "any way possible that this 47 percent can pay a nominal fee or something so that they feel that they have small ownership of the government and maybe they don't take all the handouts?" Well, now we know that the Romney-Ryan plan is to get seniors out of retirement and into the ranks of the employed.

Ryan said the answer was more jobs.
"I have an idea: Let's help them get jobs so they can get good paychecks and then they're good taxpayers," Ryan said, ignoring the fact that military members serving in war zones and seniors were among the millions who do not owe federal income taxes.

(2,480 posts)Are vets who suffer from PTSD, amputated limbs and other medical conditions supposed to wheel themselves down to the employment office! I don't think they are even supposed to work.
Have these people no hearts or brains even. Such an asshole.
you ask if R and R have no hearts or brains ? the answer is self evident every day , and it is : NO !

(37,573 posts)some of the people not paying taxes are in that group because they don't have a good paying job or because they don't have any job. That's why I didn't pay taxes in 2010, because I did not make enough money to pay federal income taxes.
But Ryan's answer is not to give me a good paying job with the government, like the one I am applying for that pays $68,500 a year.
No, Ryan would not create jobs by actually hiring people as County Treasurers, or Janitors at the local community center or teachers or firefighters. No, no, no. Ryan's plan to create jobs is to give $68,000 tax cuts to millionaires and then that money will trickle down, as if by an invisible hand, and create a good job.
That's the other part of the bullsh*t sandwich. Ryan claims he wants to create good jobs, but his only plan for that is old fashioned trickle down. A failed idea.

(544 posts)What an idiotic statement. But coming from an idiot I should not be surprised. I have worked 5 of the last 14 months. I have high skill set, tons of references and experience. For those over 55, the odds of getting gainful employment - even at half or less of their previous salary are slim and none.
Romney/Ryan economic plans only serve to enrich the very few at the expense of the 99%. They are using the same plan that Bush used to crash the world economy.

He's survived lymphoma, has a wicked neurological disease (foot flops), wears leg braces, his right arm doesn't work too well any more, has a pacemaker, and his hands are pretty bad, too. But every time he has a medical procedure, he bemoans the expense to Medicare and his insurance company. He would just love to "do his part." But I tell him he's already done his part...no worries about getting whatever he needs.

(801 posts)that Romney's statements about the 47% muddled the political waters--that sometimes the point doesn't get made the right way.
Is he on Romney's side? That is kind of like acknowledging Romney can't get his points across well and then to me it would follow that he'd also muddle being president by saying things that were misunderstood or not communicated well.
How can someone lead when they can't get what they mean or want expressed correctly? Yikes!

(25,699 posts)jesus christ, okay, you smarmy, pasty fuck, what's that? You think our facility should turn out all seventy of our residents and tell them to get a job? You want to put our elders, peoples' parents and grandparents, behind the grill of some Sloppy Joe's, and flip fucking burgers so you can take your cut from their paycheck, you grandmother-fucking VAMPIRE?
Some of our residents, who are abandoned or homeless except for us and the care we give them, who very literally would not survive without the state paying for their lives? You want us to just drop them in a gutter? These men and women, in the gloom of the end of their lives, who do not even know who they themselves are most of the time, are going ot go out and get a job, so you and your other foie-gras-frotting, Hummer-hummering, know-nothing pieces of shit can live high off the hog, off their backs and bleeding fingers.
Mr. Ryan, I hope that when you are ninety years old, and your life and well-being depends on the dedicated nursing home worker, the overworked, underpaid, and absolutely dedicated VNAA... When you are dependent on another person's hands to care for you and feed you and clean you, when you have trouble remembering the names of your children, or that you were ever a Vice presidential candidate, I hope that you have a moment where you can look back on what you're saying now... and realize just how fucked-up and ridiculous you were. I would honestly hope it happens sooner, but I'm not counting on it.

Those who are retired, those who are disabled, those who earn so little that they don't need to pay federal income taxes are STILL carrying their share of the load.
Let's simply have a 100% tax on all income above oh, I don't know, say $10 million per year. That would solve a lot.
Lil Missy
(17,865 posts)Although you do include his actual quote.
What he's doing is "allowing" people to think the 47% are all able bodied and of working age, but don't work because they are lazy or just like handouts.
Incidentally, I don't consider SS or SSDI a handout. We pay for that.
PS - It's also a dog whistle for ...... brown people! *gasp!*

If it were true, half of those people in that audience would not have a job. Oh wait, maybe they don't. Maybe that is why they have time to sit around and listen to Goober.
TomCADem
(17,837 posts)he can't be referring to the working poor whose incomes are too low to pay federal income tax, because they are working overall. So, who could Ryan be referring to?
I know you are giving him credit for an inaccurate dog whistle, but the dog whistle is based on a fiction. I am referring to the actuality of who he could be referring to.

(25,415 posts)We have disabled people, disabled vets, seniors and the working poor included in that 47%. The amount on Temporary Assistance for Needy Families is a little over 4 million. 3.28 million people on TANF are children. So it is an extremely small percentage of people he wants to "help find jobs for." We do not have a culture of dependency in this country, Ryan phrases things this way to mislead people.
Lil Missy
(17,865 posts)I forgot to mention working poor - thanks for adding that.

where you'll note that taxes are, overall, pretty fairly distributed when you include state, federal and excise taxes. A wealthy individual might say that the poor should pay more, and a poor individual might say that they pay a great deal out of their pittance, while the rich could easily pay more. But overall it resembles something that might be called "fair".

...which shows the decline in labor force participation, expected and inevitable for decades now, due to the retirement of the baby boomers. We don't have to create "150,000 jobs a month" anymore to keep even with population growth, as those leaving the workforce overbalance those entering. Overall, the recession has bumped the shift up a couple of years, but little more than that.

(32,723 posts)I've been saying this all along.
It's like when they say, "Obama cut Medicare to pay for Obamacare" they're claiming "Obamacare" is healthcare for black people so they're saying Obama is STEALING (their word) from white people's healthcare to give black people free healthcare.
This whole construct is totally dependent on people being uninformed and the media is VERY careful not to offend Republicans by pointing out their lies.

(650 posts)The vast majority of the 47% who pay no "income tax" do pay payroll taxes, sales taxes, gas taxes, property taxes, etc. that often, if not usually, add up to a HIGHER EFFECTIVE TAX RATE than Mitt Romney paid in the two (partial) years that we were priveleged enough to see. THIS NEEDS TO BE EXPLAINED AND UNDERSTOOD.
The actual percentage of the population who truly pay no taxes is probably closer to 8-10% and are people who make NO MONEY. Homeless, infirm, elderly. This is who we're gonna go after so Mitt can continue paying a lower effective tax rate than 90% of the rest of us?

Also, I read that the GOP failed to vote for a Veterans Job Bill. Guess we Vets just die for our Country and you can care less.
Vote the GOP out in November 2012 and save this Country.
