The reason why young people support Bernie is because they are not paying the bills in this country

The adults who are paying the bills prefer Hillary.

Guess why?

Would they still support him if he tells them: oh I'm counting on you to fund free college (not for you but for your younger brothers and sisters) and free health care (for your parents)!!!

When I was young and asked my parents for something, they would say "when you pay the bills you can have it".

Young people are paying for a college education and are swamped in debt when they graduate. They also face a job market in which wages have been stagnant for decades, and also face the prospect of having to cope with the consequences of global warming. And all of this is on top of the staggering national debt that they will be paying off.

To imply that they are all privileged layabouts who are supported by their parents is simply untrue. I teach at a university and I know that my students have legitimate fears for the future, and condescending to them, as some Hillary supporters are doing, is not only not going to win them over, it insults them by acting as if they have no reason to be concerned about their future, and should just trust the establishment. That is not how social change was achieved in the past, and it won't work now!

I am the father of a 21 and 27 year old.

I got news for you ... they very much know how much things cost.
They work and pay taxes and help pay (paid) their college costs; the older is paying health insurance.

They own cars and buy gasoline.
One pays rent.

I have to say this post make me rather angry.

It is condescending towards young adults who are struggling to get a start on life -- they are very much focused on the future and how what their taxes are going to fund.

They don't want anymore Iraq wars (that Hillary vote for) and they are scared of rising premiums and deductibles under Obamacare and know things have to change. And after their high hopes for Pres. Obama that were not fulfilled ... they are very much ready for the hope and change that Sen. Sanders is advocating for.

Hillary is a loser ... and this post is a perfect example of why she is going to crash.

But I think young people like Sanders because they still have faith in the system. They have a lot of faith in the office of the presidency and the power of a single individual to make drastic changes. In turn, they place a lot more blame on our past leaders' shoulders -- as if B. Clinton and Obama had a lack or will, or lack of ideas, or were just corrupt. As an older Democrat, I see our past Democratic leaders as good people struggling within a bad system and against a split electorate.

And I'm certain there's a lot more to it, too.

Most of the Millennials in my life are African American. They're living in a large Southern city and busting their collective butts to pay for college and their apartments and their bills. They get some financial support from their parents, but they're not spoiled. Job prospects here aren't too great for them unless they get graduate degrees, so that's a lot of debt. They ask me a hell of a lot of political questions, especially now. They're very idealistic, not naive, nor uninformed, simply idealistic. I remember feeling that way. Most are undecided. I try to be fair and not rain on anyone's parade.

I'm not sold on free college for everyone. I think that's going to produce undesirable side effects.. I think $15/hr minimum wage is a bad idea. It will only spur automation and outsourcing. I think Medicare for all could really work if done right. Obamacare is a cobbled together clusterf*&% if you ask me.

But what I do support is an end to bad trade deals that ship jobs overseas, big corporations avoiding taxes by stashing their money in the Cayman Islands, rewarding Corporations for moving to Ireland and hand in hand with that, money buying elections. I think if we don't do something about money buying elections, there's no sense talking about anything else. I also believe Hilary is far more likely to lead us into a senseless war.

When I was young and asked my parents for something, they would say "when you pay the bills you can have it".

It's pretty telling that you and Hillary don't think free college is not a worthy goal of our country, yet say not a peep about the multi-trillions that go to enrich corporations and their CEOs.

Slate has an article about how the economic downturn of 2008 has left young people really bitter. Old people too. I think us oldsters are far more comfortable with a politician that plays to everyone, because we remember how Stevenson, McGovern, Mondale, Dukakis and Gore (and yuck Nader) went when playing to a narrow base. You can't get anything accomplished if you don't win the general election, and we have very strong feelings that someone who calls himself a socialist is going to do in the general election based on how the ones that didn't call themselves such did.

The president makes appointments, most notably to the judiciary. They decide and set precedents in hundreds of thousands of cases. If only for that reason, we must absolutely keep the Republicans out of the White House and elect one of ours.

Sure, I'll vote for Sanders if he wins the nomination.

The only way that the young'uns would vote for Clinton if she wins the nomination is if Sanders is on the ticket, which he may not want to do, but having started this, I hope he is prepared to do that.

Oh wait....I thought this was The Onion, but the OP wasn't trying to be funny.

Just another Hillary supporter who is being honest about WHY they support her.

Debt Free Education is NOT a radical idea.
At one time, it was a cornerstone of the Democratic Party:

In our day these economic truths have become accepted as self-evident. We have accepted, so to speak, a second Bill of Rights under which a new basis of security and prosperity can be established for all—regardless of station, race, or creed.

Among these are:

*The right to a useful and remunerative job in the industries or shops or farms or mines of the nation;

*The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation;

*The right of every farmer to raise and sell his products at a return which will give him and his family a decent living;

*The right of every businessman, large and small, to trade in an atmosphere of freedom from unfair competition and domination by monopolies at home or abroad;

*The right of every family to a decent home;

*The right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health;

*The right to adequate protection from the economic fears of old age, sickness, accident, and unemployment;

*The right to a good education.

All of these rights spell security. And after this war is won we must be prepared to move forward, in the implementation of these rights, to new goals of human happiness and well-being.

America's own rightful place in the world depends in large part upon how fully these and similar rights have been carried into practice for all our citizens.
---FDR, 1944, State of the Union

Please note that the above are stipulated as Basic Human RIGHTS to be protected by our government,
and NOT as COMMODITIES to be SOLD to Americans by For Profit Corporations.

Tue Feb 9, 2016, 08:25 PM

The people who "pay the bills" in this country grew up through large parts of their working lives with strong unions, regular wage increases, no free trade agreements with slave wage countries, no globalization, and where a good education was a pretty good ticket to a steady full time job with a good chance at job security, benefits and a pension.

Young people today are looking at a bleak future without any of these things where a life of contract and part-time jobs await them, the ladder having been yanked away. So they're voting for the guy who has consistently opposed the problems put in their way for 30 years. And get this - they're being lectured by some people who benefited from the economy that no longer exists to vote for a woman to make "history" who, along with her husband, largely supported this new economic hellscape that awaits them. I won't even touch on the differences in positions on financial deregulation that led the world to doom.

Tue Feb 9, 2016, 08:26 PM
Feb 2016

I wonder? We are taxed a lot in this country and it the burden needs to shift to those at the top. We also need to prioritize spending away from perpetual war and use that war machine money to invest in our youth and rebuilding the infrastructure of this nation. We could have single payer if not for the endless war spending. We could have free college for all if not for the endless war spending. We could have a happier society if not for greed that fuels dirty water, dirty air, tainted food, for profit prisons and rewards the selfish and greedy who get richer and richer and condemn those who demand a livable wage.

The table is slanted. Level the playing field and then I wold revisit your post.

One: judging by the national debt, the Boomers aren't paying the bills either.

Two: The Boomers will "have to pay for it" for many fewer years than GenX and Millenials because they are far closer to retirement (who will be paying for their Social Security?) and fading health (who will be paying for their Medicare?) than younger people. Reduced income means reduced taxes.

Younger people wanting "free stuff" will be paying for it their entire working lives.

Boomers went to college for cheap but I guess they want to pull that ladder up behind them.

You know, since I don't have bills and all...

First of all, I'm a self-employed individual who pays my taxes, my student loan payments, and my bills. I expect nothing for free. I'm willing to pay so perhaps my nephews might one day not have to take on debt to get an education. I'm willing to pay for the things I want like single payer healthcare because my grandfather's cancer treatment costs shouldn't be a worry when he's fighting for his life. I don't want my dad, who's worked hard and raised myself and my sister, to have to worry about getting sick and going bankrupt since he can't afford insurance. I want paid family leave so that I can be there for my family when they need it most, unlike when my grandmother was on hospice a few years ago and no one could afford to take much time off to take care of her because it was unpaid. I'm willing to pay to have the people I love and care about have a safety net even if I never use it or pay more than what I get out of it. Isn't that what it's all about? Ensuring your children and future generations have things better than you did?

I'll make it simple: Take your "free stuff" bullshit and shove it.

But I thought it was the RICH WHITE LIBERALS who were original the only people voting for Bernie. (At least that used to be the claim).

Now that it is shown that Clinton is really only getting the 200K and above vote, suddenly it is the people paying the bills.

Well.. yes, those people tend to vote their interests and the candidates they can buy.

I can afford Hillary... was invited to meet her personally if I gave a contribution. Could have had dinner with her at a celebrities house in LA.

No thank you.

I'd rather donate online to Bernie and never meet him in person than have one on one time with someone who is going to kiss my rear for some cash.

I pay the bills... more than most and I am willing to pay a much larger share, provided I know it is going to the right places, which is why I am for Bernie.

the only free college he expects to get is via his earned GI Bill. He plans to finish college (2 years down in community college all paid out of pocket) during his enlistment, even if it means another enlistment majoring in economics and then enroll in law school. After law school and passing the NY Bar Exam, he plans to look for employment in government. He wants to have a career in politics/government. Maybe one day he will run for office.

I don't think he expects anything for free. I think he enlisted so he could work a job that felt meaningful. My chief request of our elected leaders is that they not create international situations in which he will get blown up.

Because we need him. And so do you.
