(72,631 posts)I have a job where first bell is 4:13 am...
I have to be there by 6:00 am, but like to get settled in before jumping in, so...
I get there a half hour early so I can start everything up, make coffee, and prepare.
My morning routine involves many things, buy I always turn on Morning Joe.
Not because I like it, but because it deals with Politics more that Today, GMA, Et. Al...
But when I turned MSNBC on, they played that video.
And I stood there in tears.
And when it finished... Joe and Mika looked kinda stunned...
And of ALL PEOPLE... Joe said (paraphrasing)... That the top two political ads this cycle BOTH came from the Bernie Sanders Campaign.
'America' (Simon & Garfunkel), and 'Together"...
It might have been the first time I ever agreed with Joe.

(72,631 posts)Most of the political ads I remember were noteworthy for their weirdness (Demon Sheep), racism (Willie Horton) or general negativity. (3 a.m. Phone Call). Bernie's ads are just masterful- no hate, no lies, just a message of hope, artfully done. Beautiful.

I don't agree with this ad

(14,881 posts)This clearly and succinctly addresses one blatantly obvious tactic used in a multitude of forms and by numerous "interest groups" to oppress all of us: the blaming of our economic and societal problems on poc, immigrants, refugees, liberals, boomers, old people, millennials, welfare queens, gays, etc.
You can't have a meaningful discussion with anybody when you're pointing a finger at them.
uponit7771
(93,532 posts)... at something or someone else?
Some of these folk need the finger pointed at them to tell them to stop the overtly condescending crap like hanging around people who say vile racialized things about Americas first black president.

(2,450 posts)Unity requires talking about differences, not erasing them. We must embrace them instead. The dissolution of identity is great in spiritual ways but it doesn't work in political spaces.
Suppose I no longer identify as a poc, will that protect me from racism? No. Am I any safer in my skin? No. Does me being a person instead of a person of color have any effect on structural racism built into our culture? Not in the slightest.
We can come together but we have to do it while conscious of racism. Calls for togetherness must not also shut down difficult conversations. We can do both, problem is so few are willing to.
Nobody is pointing fingers but it's pretty obvious that what we need is white courage, not white denial. We have had enough of that, it gets us nowhere.
I LOVE this ad, I adore its message but it does lack nuance. It's why I wrote this:

(14,881 posts)It was also done in public. It's fair game. Don't put your poc allies in a bind, stuck between two, you will lose. Every time.

(53,521 posts)I think you are just making knee-jerk assumptions that Bernie supporters in general are against things like BLM's aggressive protest tactics, which I fully support.
And these assumptions are part of the problem, we can't get common ground because people assume the worst about others and so lock themselves up in a narrow identitarianism rather than expansive, inclusive intersectionality.
uponit7771
(93,532 posts)... primaries so I don't agree with that assesment.
On a broader note, the "Dont Divide" montra has been the main stay of "don't make me uncomfortable"
That's not progressive IMHO...

Funny how the people who think that Bernie has race issues don'the ever like to discuss those topics.
uponit7771
(93,532 posts)2. In this context "dont' divide" sounds like don't discus but some people NEED TO feel uncomfortable.... people who hang around folk who say vile racialized things about Ameicas first black president need to feel uncomfortable.

He also made an appeal to break the good parts from the bad immediately after voting so what you are saying there is disingenuous. It's part of the effort to distort his record.
And, there's this.

(55,981 posts)discussions. Driving wedges between peoples is intended to divide and conquer. Mocking young females saying that they support Sanders because that's were the guys are, is dividing. These are tactics of the Conservatives.
Look in DU and find hundreds of OP's posted about issues of the day posted by Sanders posters but the discussions about issues seem to be restricted to Sanders supporters. I have tried and tried to get Clinton supporters to discuss issues like fracking, the TPP, Prisons For Profit, and on and on. Sanders is very firm in letting us know where he stands. Clinton, not so much.

Your appropriate analogy of the Clinton campaign as a lumbering ox, reminded me of W. B. Yeats' memorable 1920 poem, The Second Coming. The Clinton folk see HRC as the Second Coming of a Clinton presidency.
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?
Yeats wrote The Second Coming while Europe and much of the rest of the world was trying to recover from World War I. This was surely an important factor for him in writing the poem. Yeats saw great social troubles all around him, and remarks on a world spinning out of control. That is exactly the state of the world today, with homelessness, refugees, ISIS and endless wars, to name a few factors.
Line 2 hints at technology progressing beyond mankind's ability to control it. The problem was evident to Yeats 95 years ago, and the problem has worsened since then. Yeats shows his concern that technology has advanced to the point where mankind can do a great deal of harm with relative ease. (Send in the drones - don't bother, they're here.) The world had never seen destruction of the likes of World War I, and most people were shocked at the extensive loss of human life during the war.
In the time that Yeats speaks of, the rulers of the world were caught up in imperialism and expanding circles of power to the point where they would do almost anything to accomplish their goals. Today it is the corporate rulers of the world caught up in world dominance and bottomless greed.
The ruthless power mongers were outspoken and numerous, and there seemed to be few who dared to speak out against them in the name of peace. Today, Bernie, being one of those few.
Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in the sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

(57 posts)Thanx for the post. Unfortunately, there are those among us who seem to be suggesting that we're all in this together is a cop-out, that the only way to get things done is to drag out all the old grievances and express outrage again and again and again. It's not counterproductive to celebrate common ground and to look for solutions to those issues that divide us. Perhaps those not interested in reasoning together should consider running for Congress - on the Republican ticket.
