2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumSo what exactly has Hillary accomplished?
In fact, however, that legislation was created and driven by two senators, Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) and Orrin Hatch (R-Utah). At one point, then-President Bill Clinton turned against it, fearing that it would destroy a balanced-budget deal, and Hillary Clinton defended her husband, saying, He had to safeguard the budget proposal.
Clintons tenure as first lady is remembered most for her politically disastrous effort to transform the health-care system. In the Senate, she was a relatively junior member with few legislative victories that bear her name. And as secretary of state, she was carrying out President Obamas agenda in an administration where diplomatic policymaking was tightly controlled by the White House.

And then there is this:
Unable to answer her major accomplishments as Sec of State.
I understand that she did travel the world and smooth over relations with foreign leaders after the disasterous Bush/Cheney foreign policy. That was important.
But when I compare her tenure to that of John Kerry's, there is no comparison. In fact if it wasn't for the successes of John Kerry, I probably would never have even questioned her accomplishments as SoS.
http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2013/12/john-kerrys-top-accomplishments-and-looming-challenges/ (this doesn't even include his unrelentless work on the Iran Deal)
She talks about Hillarycare - there was no Hillary care.
http://www.americanhealthline.com/analysis-and-insight/features/why-hillarycare-failed-and-obamacare-succeeded
I will give her credit for going around the world advocating for women's rights as human rights.
Other than that - what has Hillary accomplished in all her years in public service? What makes her so much better at getting things done than Bernie - or as she calls it - a progressive that likes to get things done?

(14,881 posts)He made a lot of deals a lot better than they otherwise would have been. The most recent that comes to mind was using his vote on ACA to get an large infusion of money into "community health centers" that serve the poor. As a representative back in '01 he was able to get $100M in additional funding for community health centers.
Sanders did something particularly original, which was that he passed amendments that were exclusively progressive, advancing goals such as reducing poverty and helping the environment, and he was able to get bipartisan coalitions of Republicans who wanted to shrink government or hold it accountable and progressives who wanted to use it to empower Americans.

They list a couple dozen major amendments he authored and got passed at the link above. I've read he passed lots of amendments.
Here's what some of his colleagues have said about working with him:
Senator Roger Wicker Republican, Mississippi
I learned early on not to be automatically dismissive of a Bernie Sanders initiative or amendment Hes tenacious and dogged and he has determination, and hes not to be underestimated.
Senator Sherrod Brown Democrat, Ohio
[Sanders] would call them tripartite amendments because wed have him and hed get a Republican, hed get a Democrat and hed pass things. Hes good at building coalitions.
Senator John Mccain Republican, Arizona
[While working on the Veterans Affairs legislation], I found him to be honorable and good as his word.
Senator Chuck Schumer Democrat, New York
He knew when to hold and knew when to fold and, I think, maximized what we could get for veterans.
Senator Jack Reed Democratic, Rhode Island (again)
Frankly, without him, I dont think we would have gotten [the Veterans Affairs legislation] done It was a great testament to his skill as a legislator.

As mayor of Burlington, VT
Sanders spoke out against poverty in the third world and made good-will visits to the Soviet Union and Cuba, among other places that U.S. mayors generally didnt travel to during that time. But a funny thing happened on the way to what many had dismissed as a short-running circus. Sanders undertook ambitious downtown revitalization projects and courted evil capitalist entities known as businesses. He balanced budgets. His administration sued the local cable franchise and won reduced rates for customers. He drew a minor-league baseball team to town, the Vermont Reds (named for the Cincinnatis, not the Commies).
Sanderss appeal in Vermonts biggest city blended the think globally sensibility of a liberal college town with the act locally practicality of a hands-on mayor. He offered sister-city relations with the Sandinistas and efficient snowplowing for the Peoples Republic of Burlington. Before Sanderss mayoral victory, Leahy says, it was easy not to take him seriously. Then he got over that barrier, and got elected. He fixed the streets, filled the potholes, worked with the business community. He did what serious leaders do. He was re-elected three times.
on the Patriot Act
He was adept at working with people with whom he otherwise disagreed sharply forging alliances with conservatives like Representative Ron Paul, Republican of Texas and a well-known libertarian, with whom he shared a common hostility to the U.S.A. Patriot Act. In what might have been Sanderss signature triumph of recent years, he was instrumental in striking a provision from the Patriot Act that would have required librarians to release data on what their patrons were reading.
He was also gifted at drawing attention to his issues and (just as important) to himself. He was the first congressman to lead a bus trip to Canada to help seniors buy cheaper prescription drugs.

Seems to me what we need more than anything right now is somebody to stand up on the Bully Pulpit. I think that's his greatest strength.

(31,170 posts)a vote. I would never take someone else's word about what a candidate stands for, or has accomplished.
I don't understand how someone can make a choice without doing their homework.
The very fact that there is so much misinformation posted again and again and again is due to the fact that people don't dig in and find the facts.
I do my homework.
If I want to know what OTHERS think about an issue or a candidate, I ask questions about what they THINK.
And I have here, and GDP'ers were very helpful in answering my questions. But I would never base my judgment on what someone else says a candidate has done.
jeff47
(26,549 posts)Inherent in this claim is that the person asking the question is lazy or otherwise inferior to yourself.
Considering they provided links to stories, it's obvious they actually did do research, but you don't like the results of that research. But instead of providing any information to contradict their research, you demand they go find sources you like....while not providing any criteria for what "acceptable" sources are.
Congress.gov shows Clinton introduced a tiny number of bills. The only ones that passed were trivial, like renaming a post office. If you want to claim the candidate who "gets things done" actually got something done, you're going to have to bring more than attitude when you make a post.

◾Even though her major initiative, the Clinton healthcare plan, failed (due to Republican obstruction), you cannot deny that it laid ground for what we have today, the Affordable Healthcare Act, something Clinton supports and would continue.
◾She played a leading role in the development of State Childrens Health Insurance Program, which provides the much-needed state support for children whose parents cannot afford nor provide them with adequate healthcare coverage.
◾She was also instrumental in the creation of the Adoption and Safe Families Act and the Foster Care Independence Act.
◾Successfully fought to increase research funding for prostate cancer and asthma at the National Institute of Health (NIH).
◾She spearheaded investigations into mental illness plaguing veterans of the Gulf War; we now have a term for it Gulf War Syndrome.
◾At the Department of Justice, she helped create the office on Violence Against Women.
◾She was instrumental in securing over $21 billion in funding for the World Trade Center redevelopment.
◾Took a leading role in the investigation of health consequences of first responders and drafted the first bill to compensate and offer the health services our first responders deserve (Clintons successor in the Senate, Kirsten Gillibrand, passed the bill).
◾Was instrumental in working out a bi-partisan compromise to address civil liberty abuses for the renewal of the U.S. Patriot Act.
◾ Proposed a revival of the New Deal-era Home Owners Loan Corporation to help homeowners refinance their mortgages in the wake of the 2008 financial disaster.
◾Was a major proponent of sensible diplomacy which brought about a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, and brokered human rights with Burma.
◾Oversaw free trade agreements with our allies such as Panama, Colombia, and South Korea.
◾Was the most traveled Secretary of State to date.
◾The Clinton Foundation, founded by her and her husband, has improved the living conditions for nearly 400 million people in over 180 countries through its Initiative program.
