(6,419 posts)She actually reminds me of a GOP politician mentioning Benghazi when she keeps bringing up the obvious falsehood that Sanders was against Obama. He's rendered that point moot with his answers but she keeps bringing it up because she hopes it will smear him, because her supporters will mindlessly clap every time she does, and because she hopes it will keep black voters from going over to Sanders. It's just low-level politics as usual and I've seen enough of her doing it and can't take no more. I've watched all the debates & town halls and this is the first time I turned her off.

(23,970 posts)it's not like she doesn't know exactly what Sen. Sanders' positions are already, and it's not like he's going to change much.
even without watching his segment, someone as smart as HRC could have guessed approximately the kinds of questions he would receive, and known how he'd respond to any/all of them. hell, with the right makeup and some training in voice acting she probably could have come out there and done the whole thing pretending to be Sen. Sanders without having seen his half at all.
that's one reason i think the bit at the beginning, about Bernie winning the coin toss, is plausible. Sen. Sanders probably did want to go first, partly to inspire this kind of controversy and suspicion without having to do any attacking himself, but mostly to get the viewers earlier before they space out or switch over to Trump/CNN. meanwhile, he just goes out there and says what he would have said anyway. he wouldn't have benefited at all from going 2nd, because he wouldn't be tailoring his responses to rebut HRC's segment anyway -- that's not how he rolls.

(47,209 posts)abortion, the litmus answer just avoided it completely. I think it's not something he has given much thought to. And that he think "raising all boats" is going to be enough. I like that he is finally talking about child care and maternity leave etc, but it all seems pretty new to him.
JudyM
(29,274 posts)In her portfolio for a long time but look at what she just said this week about compromising on abortion rights... I don't know if she genuinely cares about the plight of poor women as much as Bernie does. Maybe, but I just am mistrustful of her these days.
Thanks again for hosting us all tonight, BettyEllen, you done good!!
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)that his strategy has always been to avoid "wedge issues" like the plague because then he'd be able to get a lot more conservative voters. and in the context of him up in Vermont, it didn't matter. but there is a certain dismissiveness in this approach, and I think we have both seen it here too- that women (and POC) are just being "used" by TPTB and their advocacy is disrespected (and sometimes out right trashed here) .
I think it sums up a lot of the problems people had when he started stumping and put up his website. We were invisible, and he's only started to really address us. He is still coming off noncommittally, they gave him plenty of chances to say our reproductive rights are important for a SC judge, but I have to wonder if he is afraid of saying it.
JudyM
(29,274 posts)"ONLY NOMINATE SUPREME COURT JUSTICES WHO SUPPORT ROE V. WADE AND THE REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS OF WOMEN.
As president, Sen. Sanders will only nominate Supreme Court justices who understand that Roe v. Wade is the law of the land and recognize the rights of women to have access to family planning services."
"EXPAND AND PROTECT THE REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS OF WOMEN.
Sen. Sanders has consistently fought against Republican attacks on the fundamental rights of women to control their own bodies. As president, Sen. Sanders would expand, not cut, funding for Planned Parenthood, the Title X family planning program, and other initiatives that protect womens health, access to contraception, and the availability of a safe and legal abortion."
https://berniesanders.com/issues/fighting-for-womens-rights/
Over the years he has earned a reputation that he's good to his word, which means something. Plus he's been a strong feminist in voting history, as even Gloria Steinem alluded to years ago, right? So he's got the platform and the history. He's not quite as polished at packaging his position sound bites across the board as others, I agree there. To your point, though, are you willing to consider that there may be a difference between how someone comes across and what their consistency in values, actions and voting represent they'll do?
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)was asked directly about it and would not just say that. Very strange.
I looked at his website just a week or two after he announced, btw. And after that just once when I heard he had added stuff. This was not there then. Just so you know, I did check it out a few times. And have seen all but one debate and most of the forums as well.
JudyM
(29,274 posts)doing a lot on the fly... figuratively and literally. I've heard Bernie talk like a genuine feminist and a genuine friend to the LGBT community for years. I am thoroughly confident in his earnestness and intention.
I have to say that I also think that, due to his greater familiarity with the inner workings of congress, and his greater respect by its members, that he is going to have a substantially greater ability than Hillary to right what's wrong. That's a big part of why I want him to get the nom. I can't see her getting the votes she needs and I do see her and all of congress being bogged down in endless investigations... Not insignificant.
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)mom and kid deep into poverty that "raising all boats" won't solve. I think this is a relatively new realization to him, because he preferred not to think about what some here dismiss as "identity" politics. I am glad he is finally talking about it. That dismissiveness really hurt his campaign more than anything. It's galling to hear people accuse you of self interest when their whole issue is around their own paychecks. You can dress it up about corruption but few of these people note that corruption has always been in their back yards as well- and it was hurting others. It had to trickle up to bite them on the ass before it became urgent. SO, I have a cynical point of view about that, I see the self interest there too. I can't have kids, and it's really more about society in the long term than for my own self.
JudyM
(29,274 posts)healthcare and everything else he talks about happens, that won't help people to afford kids?
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)a lot of people who most need a boost totally out of the equation. kids are graduating HS who barely know how to read or write. free college isn't going to be for them, or for women that have kids or family to take care of. Higher salaries without cheaper childcare/ daycare and parental leave will help all but the poorest. raising all boats sounds good to people who have boats, but it seems they forget that not everyone does.
JudyM
(29,274 posts)a lot of the dialogue here on DU has been about Bernie only focusing on economics and not on race; you're pointing out is that there's more to economics... Thanks for the discussion. I get it, and actually, FWIW, believe that Bernie will hire the kind of people who will care enough and understand enough to laser in on this.
He's all about pay equity, family leave, universal childcare, and I just found this on the literacy/ k-12 issues: http://feelthebern.org/bernie-sanders-on-education/#k-12-education

(47,209 posts)know that say FDR did not help POC or women nearly as he did white men, because basically we couldn't buy the houses, get the good jobs, etc and and many of our segments of the economy were shut out of social security.
And you had a lot of people who basically did not know that (because it wasn't their problem) lecturing us how they were some sort of golden years. That made some educated voters' jaws drop.
That coupled with the very frequent posts about "low info" or "stockholm syndrome" voters "falling for tactics"- our lives dismissed as mere "identity politics" instead of genuine issues- all by people who never gave much thought about who FDR was actually pulling for. Those ignorant lectures I think were the genesis of the clueless Bernie Bro idea. In my mind, many are just as self-interested and this revolution begins and ends with a pay increase- for them. I'm that cynical, and being summarily dismissed as a rube as was common early on in the campaign (and continues) did not help.
Thanks for listening without anger. There is just way too much hate out here right now to be able to have meaningful conversations at DU these days. I'm one hide away from gone for not hating on Hillary as it is.

(29,274 posts)A lot of the hate here is pure garbage. Some people are getting paid by the post. I haven't hidden anyone but I've been thinking I will.
The more of us that have sane conversations the more it'll be a positive impact, so don't give up. Nothing wrong with cynicism but change might come anyway.

(47,209 posts)And yeah, I see it in both directions, but I have been called vile names and followed into the AA group to be alert stalked.
Because I will not join in their hate. It's just foolish.
Good on you for being a thoughtful advocate- you'd make Bernie proud.

(29,274 posts)I believe they often have nothing thoughtful to say so they sling mud just to be part of the game and keep the posts coming. Honestly I don't see the Bernie peeps as being nearly as bad, but I'm sorry if you're getting the short end of it. I'll look out for ya.
