Hillary Clinton: 'I Don't Believe' I Have Ever Liedby Alex Seitz-Wald - NBCNews

Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton, who struggles with perceptions of dishonesty in polls, said Thursday that she doesn't believe she has ever told a lie and vowed to do her best to be honest going forward.
Jimmy Carter famously pledged to the American people: "I will never lie to you." Clinton didn't quite go there when asked during an interview with CBS News if she could give a similar promise.
"You're asking me to say, 'Have I ever <lied>?' I don't believe I ever have. I don't believe I ever have. I don't believe I ever will. I am going to do the best I can to level with the American people," Clinton told anchor Scott Pelley.
Clinton also faced some questions about honesty during MSNBC's Democratic town hall in Las Vegas Thursday night.
"It is obviously troubling that people have questions about me, which I will do my best to answer," Clinton said. "So people are really asking, 'is she in it for herself or is she in it for me?' I've always been somebody who believed and raised in my family and my faith that I, with my blessings, had an opportunity and an obligation to do what I could to help others. And that's what I will do as president."

(3,411 posts)Only three years earlier, Clinton wooed organized labor during her presidential campaign with promises to oppose those same deals. She called the South Korea agreement inherently unfair. She also said, I will do everything I can to urge the Congress to reject the Colombia Free Trade Agreement. Clinton has lately courted organized labors support for her current presidential bid by pledging to oppose the 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement, a deal she repeatedly touted while secretary of state.
That's lying.
To labor, unions , voters - and she damn well remembers it.

(11,546 posts)and that is a problem. Because if she was honest, she would say "I probably have at some point in my life. Now regarding such and such an issue, or that issue, no... " and then gone on to speak about the things that she is accused of lying about. THAT would make people listen and maybe give her the benefit of the doubt.

(12,754 posts)Someone may say something that's not true without being aware of the truth, but that's not considered a lie. That's considered being mistaken.
Have you ever lied is a "yes-or-no" question.
Hillary's excursion into weasel language answers it loud and clear. -- Yes.

(10,908 posts)No Washington politician has lied more since Dick Nixon. She's probably lied more because the media back then would nail politicians when they caught them lying.
There were several lies or deceptions last night.

(2,125 posts)As I said in an earlier post, it seems to me that Hillary lives in a fantasy world where she needs to be president, not only for herself and her ambition, but for us. To her we are too stupid to know what's best for us so she lies. In this context her lie is not only excusable, it's what's necessary and better for us in the end. She gets really miffed when confronted with her lies because she thinks she's doing it for us, because we're too stupid to know how much we need her. So then she lies about the lying. And gets even angrier because in her mind we just don't get it.
She infantilizes us. She has the experience and she's going to be the boss goddamit!

(13,776 posts)The sniper fire in Bosnia story. Which I don't blame her for. Memory is a slippery thing. Last week's NOVA was in part about how easy it is to plant false memories in people.
But she knows, now, that that wasn't true, so if she'd said "No, I've never ever lied," all day we'd be watching footage of her getting off the plane in Bosnia sans sniper fire. So I think she did the best she could, unless she'd decided to address Bosnia right that minute to get it out of the way, which would have been tough to do on the fly.
She's had a long and well documented public life; there's no way there aren't things in there that couldn't be cast as lies. I'm not a fan (though I'd certainly vote for her if she were the nominee), but I don't hold her answer against her either way.

(15,424 posts)But all I feel is a sense of sorrow, of being somehow soiled.
When Bernie says, "This is my viewpoint on such and such, and here's what I want to do," you just know that a) it really IS what he wants to do, and b) he's darned well gonna try.
Clinton gave some really good answers at the most recent town hall in LV, answers I really liked, but I can remember remarking to my wife, "I wish I could believe her." Because I didn't. I didn't then and I don't now.
It's just sick. I'm so sorry for her, and for us if we make her our nominee. There's absolutely nothing good about this.

She's so busy trying to be everyone to everybody in an effort to win that her words mean nothing to anybody.
