"Umm, OK, back to the issues that I think are important," Clinton says while donors applaud."

Gotcha! Thanks for clearing that up.

(13,390 posts)Unless she admits that the basis for mass incarceration was flawed, this is just another dismissive non-apology apology.
elleng
(141,926 posts)But there is some intentional dog whistling that represents a devaluation of the black lives most affected. That her "apology" doesn't mention those lives and the widespread destruction her poor choice of words caused.
A question I hope someone will ask is: "when unintended consequences are overlooked, does that mean that they were actually intended?" Bernie saw it coming and he spelled it out on the house floor.
If someone in the news media really digs into this, it will be quite revealing.

(614 posts)none whatsoever.
my momma used to tell us kids, when we messed up and hurt a sibling, whining we didn't mean to...
she'd get all stern and in our faces, waggin' that finger, and force thru her gritting teeth
"then mean not to!"
instead, yet again, she pivots to "what - I - have accomplished," etc. ad nauseam.
this, folks, is hillary's character.
or, lack thereof.
ellennelle
(614 posts)"looking back...."
looking back??? really?? she's just now "looking back" on that statement??
seriously, folks, this was a deeply considered statement she had made 2 decades ago, part of a highly crafted justification for a highly controversial bill that she was lobbying heavily for on behalf of her husband. it was absolutely not something she just happened to let slip from her lips, oops. these terms - super predators, without morals or empathy, ...brought to heel - each and every one of these words was selected for its conceptual heft and symbolic power.
it is therefore all the more damning for her to imply so heavily now, today, that she is "looking back" on what she said!!
you know, a person with any amount of conscience would have carried that freight around like a 90 car train, actively looking for an opportunity to make amends. in public. and in shame!!
instead, she's all - oh, did i say that? no one has ever asked me about that before. you sit down and STFU and listen while i talk about issues the matter to me, and then maybe i'll get back to you. for realz????
now, just to pile all manner of steaming crap on this toasted sewage, do check out who provided the conveyor belt of this non-apology!
none other than JONATHAN CAPEHART OF THE BERNIE PHOTO FRAUD/STILL NO RETRACTION/what the hell is he doing even anywhere near the wapo, let alone trying to deliver an apology????
this is insanity exploding.

(154,021 posts)good analogy
If she actually had a conversation and apologized, it would be a story, but a very different story.
I watched this go from 2 tweets a minute, to trending on twitter in less than four hours.

(79,250 posts)I've attempted to communicate with my friends on DU who support Hillary that it is things like this that will make it very difficult for people like myself who would support Clinton, should she win the nomination. Obviously, I will vote for her. But I will not be able to get a large segment of the people I would hope to, to vote. It really is that simple.

(154,021 posts)has moved to the meat department in a suburban supermarket in So Cal
This primary is ten times as bad as 2008. I don't see how this is going to inspire people to vote for her. I really cannot.
As of right now, 15:38 PST, the Hillary Clinton supporters on this site are still very much in denial that this has quite the potential of being the 47 percent moment of the campaign.
(And for the usual loyalty pledge crowd, as a fiercely independent media, and voter) who I vote for, is my business.
Arazi
(8,887 posts)older voters still watching network news. I completely agree with you that every college student in the US has seen this today
Younger voters getting info from Twitter and Internet aggregators like MSNBC and CNN (Yahoo has its lead story right now being an interview with Jane Sanders by Katie Couric https://www.yahoo.com/) is light years away from just a decade ago
I have heard from my connections to college students -- which may be limited, based in large part from having three children attending universities around NYS. And their friends and associates. Their insights have been pretty on-target.
I am really impressed by this young generation. I include those who support Hillary, though those I have contact with are 100% for Bernie. And they all know exactly why they support the Sanders Revolution. They are unwilling to accept our current economic system.

That it was upfront all day and made it onto the online front pages is good. That Chris Hayes mentioned it is good too!
I'm going to guess its made at least some splash. We'll see if it has staying power over the next week although I remember RMoneys 47% remark took some time to build into the public consciousness after it initially hit the public
