2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumUntil today, I could've voted for Hillary if she won the nomination.
This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by BooScout (a host of the 2016 Postmortem forum).
But in the past week, I've been lambasted by two different Clinton supporters. Been called an idiot. A nut. Told I had no clue.
And today...on this very forum, was essentially called a conspiracy nut and when I tried to discuss it in civil manner and asked why it was okay to insult me...I was blocked after literally being mocked.
Guess what....I can't vote for someone that tells me I'm dumb. I can't vote for someone who insults me and mocks me.
So....Hillary supporters...today you lost my vote. Completely. I dont give two shits that it means Hillary lost a voter today. Reel your dismissive supporters in because there is a large bloc of your people that are just assholes. There. I said it.
Does that mean I'll get banned once the nomination is decided and I won't vote for her if she's lucky enough to turn this ship around (yeah...2008...de ja vu all over again?)? Okay. After 12 years here...it's been a good run. Over my dead body are you getting my vote.

(6,719 posts)I have been stunned at the people who just assume we, the whole world, will vote for Hillary. The negativity and lies in January did me in. (10,578 posts)It doesn't seem fair to regard that as coming from Hillary Clinton herself.
If she wins the nomination why not hear what she has to say and make a sincere evaluation as to who you want to vote for then.
The election is 8 1/2 months away. A lot will happen between now and then. We don't know what factors will enter our thinking as the election progresses.
For what it's worth, I have felt disrespected by some Sanders supporters on a few occasions. But if Bernie is the nominee I will not hesitate to vote for him.
Well put StevieM. Don't judge the candidate by a minority of their supporters.

These people who shall remain nameless invite disgust in their democratic discussion. OTOH, I've seen way more tolerance to opinion on the Bernie Sanders Group.
In the real world outside of DU, I have felt the lack of historical perspective coming from HRC's supporters. If she wins the nomination, it will be because of the bully tactics of the DNC. The DNC will fall apart at that point.

(24,411 posts)I will never vote for Hillary Clinton.
And my decision isn't based on "my feelings being hurt" as a Hillary fan mocked up thread. It not about my candidate losing.
Its about her behavior and her policies. Hillary has been a warmonger for decades. She picked Robert Kagan, the FOUNDER of the PNAC movement to be her foreign-policy adviser while she was Secretary of State.
Hillary is entrenched with the worst powerful corporate sociopaths who are buying and destroying our democracy--Wall Street, the private prison industry, the fracking industry and the defense industry, just to name a few.
I am terrified of Hillary Clinton because we we used to fight Republicans on corporatism, prolonged Middle East war for profit, Wall Street corruption and income inequality. If there is a Democrat in the White House who ENGAGES in these behaviors and who is not fighting against these horrors--then what happens to our country?

(761 posts)I will vote for the candidate I think will best address the issues that are important to me. Period.
For me, the number one issue is breaking the stranglehold the oligarchs have on determining what Washington will or will not address. The Princeton study suggests Washington allows no real participation in setting the national agenda unless you are filthy rich or a large corporation. According to the authors of that study, what is offered to us 99% is regularly held elections, the right (for most of us!) to vote, and a modicum of free speech and free assembly, though those two seem to be under increasing pressure to be limited. That suggests to me that all other issues that we care about be it health care, systemic racism, civil rights, education, women's health, immigration, global warming, a clean natural environment, poverty, and so on, cannot and will not be addressed by our leaders, until we have leaders willing to take on the oligarchs.
I do support Bernie because he has pledged to do that and he has a record to suggest he's sincere when he says that.
Hillary hasn't proved herself to me on this issue at this point. She will need to do that if she expects my vote.
No one in the GOP will take on the oligarchs, so I would never vote for a Republican. Actually, I've never voted for a Republican!
If there isn't a place in mainstream politics for my issues, then what's left is the streets. Howard Zinn argued that meaningful progressive change in this country has only occurred after people in sufficient numbers have taken to the streets and scared the shit out of the oligarchs. I wish we could coalesce around this issue rather than snipe at each other.

Threatening to stay home on election day only has two explanations. One is if a person is working for the Republicans to counter their weak candidate by talking Dems into withholding their votes. The other is if that tactic is working.

(10,595 posts)If Bernie asks you to vote for Hillary just as enthusiastically as Hillary asked her supporters to vote for Obama in 2008?
Hillary had a lot of supporters in 2008 just like you who swore they'd never vote for Obama because someone online was rude to them, or they were mad because Hillary was asked if she preferred diamonds or pearls while the men were asked real questions in the debate, or the political pundits said mean, sexist things about her (and it was much worse last time than this time). When she gave her concession speech and then went on to fully support Obama, her supporters eventually followed and helped to elect him. Some of them had even wanted to protest in the convention, but you may recall that Hillary was so very gracious about nominating him in the convention that it pretty much fell flat. It's the way it works. All the snark disappears and everyone shakes hands, has a hug and forgives. I hope it works that way for you.
Most of us get a little worked up about our favorite candidate. We say things we wouldn't otherwise. We sometimes take things the wrong way. Some even quote untrue things or make wild assumptions to make a point. But if we're really Democrats we will put aside this pot stirring after the convention and get on with the job at hand.

(10,559 posts)And no, I am not making a slur about female dogs - I am using an old saying to point out the poster is thinking that people who behave badly on discussion boards are representatives of their candidate.
I understand the logic, but frankly cannot support it. There are a lot of assholes in the world, and sometimes all of us take the asshole role on when Primary Passions are running high.
There are many ways to recruit people: fear based, enthusiasm based, enticement based, reverse psychology, peer pressure/cool kids do it, etc. Logic is in theory the default, but probably the least commonly employed. Insulting people is probably one of the least effective, but maybe it works for some people?
If you view "looney lefties" as losers, it is easy to insult them (when you aren't busy cajoling them for their vote), which is probably why center right folks (also known as Clinton supporters) really don't have a good way of discussing issues. The things Progressive Democrats want sound as impossible as rainbow kittens with butterfly wings....
Which means instead of trying to find a way to work for the dreams, they "settle" for what they think they can get, which means starting from a position of weakness before the negotiations even begin.
This nomination is really for the soul of the party. The Republicans are trying to figure out if they are going to be the bat shit crazy religious nuts or something, so they are in the middle of their own revolution.
It is primary season. Take a breath. No one wins the general without stealing from the other team. We are still in the very beginning of this latest game.

(9,527 posts)that black voters who support Clinton have Stockholm syndrome and that another has linked South Carolina being ranked last in education to Clinton's expected win right?
By your logic, black voters should refuse to support Sanders if he wins the nomination.

(12,647 posts)who are disrupting the conversation here at DU. The words and bad intent of some of our candidate supporters call into question their loyalty to Democratic principles. If you are persuaded to hold back a vote against the nightmare of Republican rule they would have succeeded.
Question all the posters of this sort of underhanded, illintended, infiltration in the public forum.

(3,795 posts)But, I completely understand if people have a difficult time voting for Hillary in the G.E. after the campaign SHE has chosen to run during this primary.
It seems obvious that a huge part of her campaign has been to make Bernie SUPPORTERS appear toxic, racist, sexist, and as far-left loons. She, her family, and her surrogates in the media have done this throughout the campaign. Many times. Anytime she attacks Bernie on the issues she loses support and Bernie gains support because she sounds like a Republican whenever she does it. So, she decided to make the Bernie Supporters brand toxic. That's going to hurt her in the G.E. if she's the nominee.
I don't know how anyone could not understand that if you openly dismiss and ridicule a group of people then getting that same group of people to vote for you might just be a tad bit difficult. She's made this very personal, and it's a tragic mistake.

(53,978 posts)The next POTUS might install as many as 4 Supreme Court justices. While I don't see a great deal of difference between Hillary and a moderate Republican, I'd rather take my chances with her for appointments over someone like Ted Cruz. We could see our democracy turned into a theocracy. My advice: vote. Hold your nose if you have to and think of it as a vote against the batshit crazies on the right.

(13,005 posts)The candidate and campaign have no control over them, and you're not voting for them.
That said, I certainly wouldn't mind if you voted for Bernie.
But there are much better reasons than the fact that some Hillary supporters are jerks. I'm quite sure you can find some Bernie supporters who are jerks as well. Vote for whoever you think will make this a better country.
