Great read.
In March 1981 Bernie Sanders won the most improbable victory to become the mayor of the city of Burlington. Running for mayor as an independent, his victory over the political establishment rocked the city to its core.
As a young lawyer at Vermont Legal Aid, I watched as Bernie led an army of young, enthusiastic campaign workers into the lower income neighborhoods and dormitories at the University of Vermont. His message even then is very much his message now that established politicians had ignored the interests of the middle class, had supported property tax increases without concern for waste and inefficiencies, and were in bed with big developers looking to develop precious public land. He empowered hundreds of people who had never previously participated in the political process to believe that politics mattered, and that their vote could change their lives.

(1,021 posts)even if the Free Press is a garbage corporate paper. Well, it's on its way out anyway. But they do run some nice stuff occasionally.
I wonder if those were the same employees who contacted the paper earlier offering off-the-record dumps (which the Free Press refused).
Thanks for the post!
