2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI got a story for some here
in 2012 we covered the returns for the Presidential. Since we do not get cooties when around Republicans, we got the RNC HQ to cover, plenty of local politics on that one. So we got to be in the middle of it when Rove was begging the FOX producers to hold off calling it for Obama, because of internal polls. They showed that Romney was winning OH... you all might remember that part of the story. To be in the midst of deep partisans watching that was special.
They were hooting and hollering for Rove... and when FOX still called it for Romney, he warned them they wold be sorry. Oh and internal polls are not secret, they are well known among media and anybody who really pays attention. This is what happens when they are wrong... and they can be.
http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/12/01/when-internal-polls-mislead-a-whole-campaign-may-be-to-blame/
The NY Post (and that has to do with internal party wars) released a pol showing internals, that is what they are called, that are not too happy for the GE. You all go ahead and ignore that. I think this year I will hang out at Democratic party HQ, They got better food, better mood, and all that. I wonder though if they will go from WE ARE WINING, to worst than a wake in about five seconds like their counterparts did in 2012? I admit that will be a cherished memory. I have never seen victory parties disappear so fast... or for that matter the booze... or the place empty so fast.
Oh and the link is back up, if you are curious you can go find it yourself. I love to see the games that parties play... They are fascinating exercises... ALWAYS.

(8,541 posts)Is that both the Republicans and Democrats want to make sure that it's only a game that they can play.

(154,021 posts)but the link disappeared, for a couple minutes. So I assumed they were retracting so I did the honest thing and brought it down, it is back up Will PM it to you

(30,099 posts)The outlier..how do you measure/predict an unprecedented primary election?
No one is sure what will happen and after Super Tuesday his win will
result with at least Carson and one other dropping out. Cruz has to win
Texas, and he is ahead, I think..so maybe he stays in. The GOP is
still in freaked out mode and since one does not usually think clearly
in that mode, they probably will screw up their plans to attack him.
They think Romney going after him will do it? Now that made me laugh.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)he is not going to the R nominee. Quite simply, while he is the angry at the guv'ment type (and a few other lovely things that make him actually worst), Trump is the outsider leading the revolt. Hell, even CNN said that right now.

(154,021 posts)and somebody we have yet to hear from, that has never been elected to dog catcher, let alone anything else either. But after all the attacks and snipping, I suspect that if he wants a latino, it will be the Governor of New Mexico... incidentally they might approach her for that sacrificial third party run as well.

(8,541 posts)The reason I say Rubio is that it would help Rally the base but with some party big shots getting behind Trump, Rubio might not be needed. It's gonna be an interesting time till Nov lol!
Jefferson23
(30,099 posts)to knee cap him. He is referring to Trump's response to KKK as disqualifying.
Now, I ask you..in what universe do these people live? They haven't
figured out who supports Trump and why?? Why would they care
what he thought?
I think they're stuck with Trump and I am just waiting to see who
else in the GOP like Christie will come along and endorse him.

(154,021 posts)does that really have to be clarified? OF course it does.
Remember I am a reporter not a partisan, but since you insist, even with all her faults, and she has more than I care to mention, she is better than Trump. And yes I have said it, he will be the nominee,, The rest of the exercise for the Rs is just theater at this point.
I just expect her to not do well in the GE and people better start paying attention to that. Because the country is the one that will suffer. And by the way bettyellen, others in elite media are starting to say it too. YOUR PARTY nominates her, they will lose the general election. But go ahead and nominate whoever you want. But chew on this. if NY is in play... so will CA
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)And agree the country will suffer greatly if we do not unite to squash Trump. I only differ from you in that I believe that will be done, because it has to.

(154,021 posts)and 2014 comes to mind
Of course the usual suspects will be blamed. CUE THE USUAL SUSPECTS, becuase it could never be a weak candidate that generates little fire, except for the other side.
This is a change election and this has been cooking for years.

(47,209 posts)It seems there is still a huge disconnect between social media participation and actual voting. It sucks.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)and I have told that to Sanders supporters, I have no idea how they are going to translate big turnouts at rallies to actual votes. For the record, everybody is having issues with that one. Something is in the water, that our 18 year olds have no interest whatsoever in actually voting.
I partially blame the educational system which does not teach civics anymore, but voting is also about class, and to a point race. People who live at a place where voting tends to be something you do, tend to go vote. People who do not, simply do not get into the habit.
There was a fascinating piece on NPR about that, and how people who are poor already gave up on the system and do not think it makes any difference to them. And they have a point. So I do not blame them. On the other hand, folks just across the road in a nice hood, middle class and all go vote in much higher numbers. The only thing that breaks that pattern is poor kids going to college, or the military.
But kids tend to vote overall at much lower numbers and I think the country NOT teaching them civics is part of it, but not the full answer.

(47,209 posts)I hope they surprise us in November. They really need to start paying attention to all three branches of out government instead of thinking about it only once every four years. All Dems do.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)if a RW ideologue is nominated to the USSC I laughed. Even if Satan himself was nominated the courts are a mystery wrapped in an enigma and could not be even more distant to most americans.
Why the, if we do not get the WH the other side will get to change the court is pretty hollow as messaging. Most voters, simply do not care about that issue. Now streets, they do. Courts, snort. So every time I read that one here, I just laugh.
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)will start paying attention. I think we are lucky to have a battle of the USSC right now, and hope the voters follow the story.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)they just don't
A very small percentage on both sides do... your average voter could not give two shits about it.
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)voters grow up and realize there are three branches of govt. That would be awesome. Without that, we were going to be fucked no matter who wins the WH.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)have become extremely distant to most folks, well except ensnared in the system
It is not your expectations, it is reality. And civics knowledge.... jesus, have you seen articles on how many americans (native born) could even pass the citizenship exam? It is a good window into that. Now ask them about the oscars or the superbowl or to vote in American Idol... that they care. This is by design.

(154,021 posts)or any politician.
Like the base revolt your party is enjoying, and the open warfare on the republican side, it is nice to see people blame the voter. This ignorance has been cooking for decades and this is by design. Nothing more or less than the country will pay the price, but I have resigned myself to it.
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)I blame all of our citizenry for not paying closer attention. It is a damned shame.
