(4,551 posts)It's hard to say. It's a common expression when people discuss politics and debates.

(36,437 posts)"Bush will throw a lot of spears in his speech to the GOP Senate retreat this week."
"Clinton threw a lot of spears in his meeting with Gingrich."
"Ford has been known to throw his share of spears when negotiating with House Democrats."
Those are all examples I just made up. Needless to say, they look ludicrous. Can you find real examples of people using this expression to describe debates and politics? How about one? Shouldn't be that hard, given how "common" it is.

(29,461 posts)If it's sofa king common, you shouldn't have a bit of trouble Googling up a passel of 'spear' references. I've lived a long time, and I have *never* heard the word 'spear' used in connection with politics and/or debates.

(10,751 posts)...I've been following politics for 50 years now and have never, NOT ONCE, heard ANYONE refer to "throwing spears" when talking about politics or debates.
There are many colorful expressions that have been used when people discuss politics and debates, that much is true. But this expression is a new one. Gee I wonder why he came up with it.
My ears are ringing, but I can't quite figure out why... wait... what is that very, very high-pitched sound I can barely hear? ... yup. Dog whistle.

(21,925 posts)Where in southern Africa, Zulu warriors equipped mainly with spears and cowhide shields against rifles and artillery pieces completely overran and annihilated about 1,800 British and colonial troops, reminiscent of the Battle of the Little Big Horn in the U.S. three years before.

(21,925 posts)The movie was about the second British invasion and the battle of Rorke's Drift. I didn't mention the entire war, only the defeat of the British ending their first invasion of the Zulu Kingdom. Isandlwana was a crushing defeat for the British by native peoples, mainly spears against state-of-the-art guns.
Confusious
(8,317 posts)Even though it wasn't about that, it was a similar condition, and a good movie.
(and it made a good film "ZULU!," with Micheal Caine)
but lost the war... and it made a good film, etc etc etc.(you should have tied those two together.)
If you're going to quote a battle, you might as well be ready for the "and they won/lost that war" that is going to come right after.
aint_no_life_nowhere
(21,925 posts)Does it detract from the great victory of native peoples using spears against rifles?
Confusious
(8,317 posts)because that's what people do. "person 1: Well, they won X battle. person 2: Yea, but they lost Y war, bad example"
I guess you would have never heard it if you had been hiding under a rock.
You have some sort of "noble savage" complex? As far as your "native peoples" go, they're human. They're just as bad as the rest of us, given the chance. Shaka Zulu, while he created a nation, was also a brutal bastard. American Indians liked to scalp each other, and spent a lot of time fighting BEFORE the Europeans showed up.
aint_no_life_nowhere
(21,925 posts)against all odds and with inferior technology whether it's Zulus or Sioux warriors. I have some kind of mental "complex" because I find that inspiring? And I've been hiding under a rock because I'm not allowed to mention such a remarkable victory and show of courage unless I discuss the entire war?
Sorry man, I just don't get where you're coming from.

Disgusting as hell but the people who that appeals to wouldn't vote for President Obama anyway. Sad though...sigh
