WASHINGTON Rising gasoline prices, trumpeted in foot-tall numbers on street corners across the country, are causing concern among advisers to President Barack Obama that a budding sense of economic optimism could be undermined just as he heads into the general election.
White House officials are preparing for Republicans to use consumer angst about the cost of oil and gas to condemn his energy programs and buttress their argument that his economic policies are not working.
In a closed-door meeting last week, Speaker John Boehner instructed fellow Republicans to embrace the gas-pump anger they find among their constituents when they return to their districts for the Presidents Day recess.
"This debate is a debate we want to have," Boehner told his conference Wednesday, according to a Republican aide who was present. "It was reported this week that we'll soon see $4-a-gallon gas prices. Maybe higher. Certainly, this summer will see the highest gas prices in years. Your constituents saw those reports, and they'll be talking about it."

edited to add:
along with clips of RW apologists pointing out that the President (Bush43) had absolutely no control over the price of gasoline at the pump, and how George W. Bush didn't do a thing, other than hold the hand of a Saudi, to lower gas prices.

(4,742 posts)people have short term memories.
You ned to remind people that the price of oil is set by the evil Wall Street. The speculators are the ones who are running the price. If Obama were really politically smart he would send some sort of a bill to Congress to remove oil from the financial instituion speculators. Let the Republicans vote against that one.

(101,311 posts)Oil is a global commodity. Trading happens all over the place. If you banned speculation on oil in the US, it might manage to get everyone else to denominate oil in a currency other than dollars, but it wouldn't stop the speculation on world trade.

(24,412 posts)if that mattered to the GOP that they need to actually DO something once in awhile rather than just sit around and point fingers and campaign off of people's misery. Why people whom act as the "scourge" of government are so insistent about being part of it continues to mystify me.
What I continue to find interesting is that gas didn't spike to $3+/gal and become the new "normal" for most people until AFTER the 2010 midterm elections. I remember that gas prices went DRAMATICALLY down following the gas hikes in Summer 2008. Right after the 2008 elections, gas fell dramatically around here- leveling off at about $1.30- and remaining around $2 for most of 2009-2010. It's really hard to believe that there aren't some strings being pulled SOMEWHERE.

(2,237 posts)Helping Canada sell gas to foreign countries in South America will clearly lower gas prices in the States!
Who cares if it's not being sold in the US!
And who cares if Canada is going to drill for the oil and sell it anyway without our help! Us acting as a middle man would clearly have lowered the price of gas by over a dollar a gallon!

(1,138 posts)A lower refining capacity is contributing. Along with global economic expansion. Gas is too high here. it is $3.60 per gallon. If it goes over $4.00 I will be in trouble. I do not care who is to blame the damn price is too damn high. It was only $3.12 a gallon not long ago. I have to use at least 12 gallons a week. My income is going down and the price is going up.

(18,541 posts)put an end to speculation in commodities by anyone who's not directly involved in the production of those commodities. Federal subsidies to Big Oil could be looked at as well - They're raking in world-record profits every quarter, paying little in taxes and still being subsidized in various ways. That shit needs to end.
Pegging the gas tax (Federal and State) to a percentage of the price, rather than 'cents per gallon' wouldn't hurt, either. We need infrastructure improvements, and they've got the money to pay for it.

The wackos don't know better and Obama will definitely get blamed.

(9,314 posts)5 investment banks have been named as participating. Also the Koch Brothers are buying huge supplies and storing them in tankers offshore. By increasing the demand, they wait for the price to increase and sell at a profit. You remember the Koch Brothers, Mr. Boehner. They contribute to many of your Republican politicians to make sure their (the Koch Brothers) interests are protected.

(24,689 posts)and geopolitical issues/crises that affect supply. A US President has little to no control over this other than doing things to keep the peace and perhaps to convince the Saudis to pump more. The GOPers have nothing legitimate to attack the President on this... but of course they frequently do things that aren't legitimate.

(34 posts)Tax increase at the pump is 100% responsible for the rise in Gas Price.
Every gallon of gas sold at the pump contains 10% ethanol & is called E10. Ethanol had replaced 15% of the gasoline sold in this country. 10% was sold as E10 & 5% was sold as E85. On January 1, 2012 the 45 cent tax cut on ethanol was not renewed because the USG needs more tax money. This increased the tax everyone paid at the pump by 5 cents since all gasoline is E10. For E85 users the tax increased by 38 cents per gallon. E85 users switched to E10 gasoline driving up gasoline demand 5% since then. The sudden price spike on the first day of 2012 is the tax hike & the continuing rise is caused by demand increase until the price rises by 38 to 45 cents so E85 use will compete once again holding gas prices in check. Also North Carolina increased their gas tax by 20 cents on the same date.
