Mother Jones: "Hillary Clinton's Trust Gap Is Killing Her With Millennials"

[link:http://motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2016/03/hillary-clintons-trust-gap-killing-her-millennials|
Hillary Clinton's Trust Gap Is Killing Her With Millennials]

Bernie Sanders didn't win 80 percent of the millennial vote in Michigan just because he's an idealistic liberal. The only way you get to a number like that is against an opponent who's pretty seriously disliked.

But why? The most obvious reason millennials dislike Hillary so strongly is that they think she's too slippery. "I feel like Clinton lies a lot," a college student told PBS a few weeks ago. "She changes her views for every group she speaks to. I can't trust her." Quotes like that litter the internet, and in tonight's debate Karen Tumulty asked about it yet again. "Is there anything in your own actions and the decisions that you yourself have made that would foster this kind of mistrust?"...Unfortunately, Hillary has fostered a lot of this mistrust herself....Tonight, Jorge Ramos brought up allegations by the Benghazi families that Hillary had deceived them, and asked, "Secretary Clinton, did you lie to them?" The only answer to this question is "Of course not." But Hillary started by expressing her sympathy for the Benghazi families and only then said of her accuser, "She's wrong." Maybe this seems like nitpicking, but it's not. Unless the very first words out of her mouth are "Of course not," she's going to leave an immediate impression that she's about to tap dance around the whole thing. I like Hillary, and even I sighed when she began delivering that answer.. ..People my age might forgive Hillary a bit of this lawyerlyness because we remember the 90s and understand the damage that even a slightly misplaced word can cause. But millennials don't. They just see another tired establishment pol who never gives a straight answer about anything.... especially this year, when her competition is a guy like Bernie Sanders, this just makes her look evasive and insincere.

After 40 years in the public eye, I don't know why Hillary is still so bad at this. But she is. For a long time, liberals mostly forgave her wary speaking style because they were keenly aware of the Republican smear campaign that birthed it. Now, for the first time, there's a generation of liberals who don't care about any of that. And an awful lot of them loathe her.

Your reading of the American voter's intellect appears to be square on! (She's been accused of so much she must be guilty of something and thereby untrustworthy.)

They may not have got a conviction in the media with Benghazi but they got one in the polls.

If you're in the limelight, you take a lot more shots than those who are not.

But a lot of this, she brought on herself.

The cattle deal, Whitewater, Travelgate, etc the Clintons had a big hand in that. Straight faced, Bill flat out lied to all of America about Monica.

You can't blame the GOP for her emails. Eventually, when they properly report this, I think we will come to understand laws were broken and the GOP didn't do that.

The GOP didn't lie in her 1st press conference about the emails. Hillary did.

Four Benghazi family members think they were lied to by Hillary - you cannot pin that all on the GOP.

All the dishonest stuff she's pulled in the last 60 days against Bernie ... how can you blame that on the GOP. Those kids had front row seats to see her do it much like I did when I was their age and protesting Nixon. Nixon is probably part of the reason I'm so down on Hillary's lying. It was a really tough lesson to learn. Like Iraq but tens of thousands more US soldiers died and made us feel like we didn't do enough and bore some responsibility. Shit like that stays with you. You never forget feeling like that. Maybe it's mixed with bitterness. We went very quickly from flower children euphoria to something very ugly and disillusioning.

The millennials are online. They're seeing what is really being said about her - the old Youtube videos of her lying. There not getting the Clinton sanitized version from the Clintons mainstream media friends.

I contend that if the rest of Democrats in America saw was we've seen online, they'd be like DU with about 70-80% for Bernie. You can bicker about the numbers but the swing would be substantial.

If Hillary really wants to be President for the United States, at 68 years old, she needs to suck it up and take responsibility for her actions. The vast majority of why the folks online don't trust Hillary is because of things Hillary did - not the GOP. It's kind of insulting of people's judgement to suggest otherwise.

Her cautious "lawyerly" style is not selling anymore.

Hillary should save her distortions and smear tactics for tRump, not Bernie.

They are trying to scrape this annoying upstart off by any means necessary.

So obvious.

They think she's "boring" and old fashioned in her views. Most of what they learn is from other people on Tumblr. One thing they don't give a crap about is trust gap ( they would look at me with the eyes.) They just aren't that sophisticated in their opinions, as one might expect.
