Bernie Sanders Aims For Another Big Upset In Florida, And The Numbers Show Hes On The Way On Thursday His Rally Drew 9,000 In Tampa, Clintons Had Just 600Nathan Francis - Inquisitr
March 11, 2016

<snip>
Bernie Sanders wants to spark a political revolution in Florida, and if the numbers this week are any indication, hes well on his way.
Fresh off a huge upset win over Hillary Clinton in Michigan, Sanders has shifted his focus to Florida and the important race that will take place there next Tuesday. Florida had been seen as a safe Clinton win, but after Sanders overcame a 20-point deficit to take Michigan, there are seemingly no easy wins, and the coming days are seen as critical.
If the rallies held there this week are any indication, Bernie Sanders is the one with all the momentum. On Thursday, both candidates touched down in Tampa for rallies, and the differences were stark. Bernie Sanders drew 9,000 people to the Florida State Fairgrounds, a group that Florida Politics called a multicultural mix of citizens.
Hillary Clintons rally, meanwhile, drew just 600 people to her midday rally.
Sanders spoke of a political revolution in Florida, noting that enthusiasm and a huge turnout will be needed if he is to pull off another big upset.
On Tuesday there is going to be a very important primary here in Florida, Sanders told the huge crowds at Expo Hall. If there is a large voter turnout, we will win.

Older voters in Florida will appreciate that especially.

I have seen lots of Republican stickers and signs, a few Bernie signs, and nothing for Clinton, anywhere. If Clinton gets the nomination, the state will probably go Red. I see none of the Clinton enthusiasm that her poll #s would indicate.

(4,234 posts)it the voting machines are programmed to provide the sufficient tilt as usual, it won't make much difference. FL is a case where, if the vote could be audited by counting the actual paper ballots, there would be some really surprising discoveries I think.
In order to win, Bernie will have to win by something like 12% I'm guessing.
I hope my pessimism is uncalled for. I'm pulling for him, but the fix is in all over the country I'm afraid.

(15,435 posts)I have seen it myself. Two different lock boxes at the end of the day have ALWAYS made me wonder. When the paper is fed into machines, they DO get kicked out and then set aside. At the end of the day they get locked up separately & I've never gotten a good answer about EXACTLY what really happens. They say they'll be counted, but who knows?
AND, these machines have been hacked, there is proof of this. FSTV has been running a 2 part program on machine voting and the whole sordid story!

both north and south has never seen a Clinton sticker. Not one time. They do see Bernie stickersnot a lot but more and more of them every week and he's the only one they do see.
They also see "Overturn Citizen's United" stickers. These are probably Bernie supporters since Hillary exemplifies the use of Citizen's United.

NPR said nothing about Bernie also being in Florida and drawing 9000 at one of the 3 events he did yesterday in Florida.
My guess is that Hillary likes to play to small venues and small crowds to keep the security tight and make sure there aren't any hecklers.

(10,164 posts)...doesn't Bernie pretty much always out-draw Hillary by a mile at these kinds of rallies?
Still...so many young voters! They are NOT polled (most of the polls are of "likely voters," and that usually means "voted in the last two election), eliminating the entire 18-26 crowd. It will take spectacular turnout from this demographic to offset Hillary's AA advantage alone, so I'm doubtful it can be enough...but we'll see!
Optimism
(142 posts)that we wouldn't refer to the black vote as some sort of monolithic vote-as-one inevitable block.
I realize (I guess) that this is based for the most part on how blacks (or older women, or gays, or Millennials, etc) have tended to vote in specific past elections, but it's still pretty presumptuous, and in my mind, somewhat disrespectful ?! I know I'm probably being idealistic and all, but the sooner we get away from talking about voters in terms of 'groups' (and their expected voting patterns), and instead talk of them as individuals, well ... the better.
The one label I'm sort of okay with is 'informed' and 'uninformed' , because that's something we can actually change. Skin color, age, sexual orientation, gender ... not so much.
Anyway, let's go INFORMED VOTERS for BERNIE !!
Lizzie Poppet
(10,164 posts)But the fact remains that in this primary, black voters have broken for Hillary by a significant margin, just as young voters have overwhelmingly broken for Bernie. Not taking this data into account would be a mistake, even for us armchair "pundits" at DU (and certainly by the campaigns).

There are counties in Florida where HALF the population is 55 and over. Florida is a Winner Take All State and that worries me.

Someone on their campaign should have known you had to be registered as a Democrat to vote in the primary, but I was never told that. They should have emailed me. When I heard about it on one of the shows I listen to on the internet, I called the county government but it was too late.

(4,370 posts)I stopped by the Bernie HQ on Main Street in Jacksonville earlier this week to pick up and drop off.
My goal was to pick up yard signs and drop off a donation. They were out of yard signs -- they flew out the door within hours of the office opening just a couple days prior. That was disappointing for me, but encouraging regarding momentum after the Michigan primary and especially after the latest debate. So instead of planting multiple signs at some of the busiest intersections, we improvised: I came away with two cardboard signs that I now proudly display on my block.
The enthusiasm of the people staffing the office more than made up for lack of weatherproof signage.
My only regret is that my current job situation prevents me from helping with the much-needed canvassing. That's why I gave money.

Politicians will jump at ANY chance to be on the side of a political winner.
Remember all the Super-Delegates that were for Clinton in 2008... until they weren't ?
She's way ahead in delegates even without the supers. She's way ahead in actual votes.
Remember Obama is a Democrat. Hilly and Barack have been all about the party. Supers aren't going to jump ship easily for someone who has spoken so ill of their party, especially since he's still running as an Independent for his reelection campaign.
And Bernie has very little path to the nomination mathematically.
