This Is Why Hillary Clinton's Comments About Nancy Reagan Still Matter

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/hillary-clinton-nancy-reagan-aids_us_56e44622e4b0860f99d93d02

Her remarks on the late first lady's legacy on HIV and AIDS can't be forgotten.

Hillary Clinton may have quickly apologized for her comments on Friday praising fellow former First Lady Nancy Reagan for her "effective" and "low key advocacy" on HIV and AIDS, but for many the remarks are still problematic.

Michelle Goldberg noted in Slate how absurd the former Secretary of State's comments were, given that the Reagan administration publicly laughed at the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s. Nancy Reagan did little to sway her husband, Goldberg said.

"In policy terms, Clinton’s misguided praise for Nancy Reagan doesn't mean much; there’s certainly no reason to think she’d follow Reagan’s disgraceful example as president," Goldberg wrote. "But her words suggest that, on some deep level, she really is out of touch with progressive concerns."

--------------------------------

She's simply not a progressive. Among other things, you cannot be in bed with Wall Street and be progressive at the same time. Up to this point in time, and AT this point in time, and for the foreseeable future, these things are mutually exclusive.

Which is what the DLC "Shift" to the Right was all about so a little "Reagan Praise" is not beyond them. I think the only thing they miscalculated was the power of the internet on this one

the public. She won't reveal what she told the oligarch corporations that made her wealthy because she told them what she really believes, which is totally different from her campaign rhetoric. With re. to Nancy Reagan, she slipped and spoke the truth out loud.

This isn't the same as her "misspeaking" about Sen Sanders voting against the auto industry bailout. That was premeditated deception that back-fired. She totally under estimates how intelligent the People are. Of course the corp-media would have let it go, but with social media, her "misspeaks" won't go unnoticed.

This piece makes one statement that has been echoing in my head for weeks now. Hillary Clinton is "simply not a progressive..."

That is the root cause of the problem her campaign cannot solve.

She may win anyway, but stagger into the general election weakened with a complete lack of enthusiasm from the progressive wing (which now includes the Miilenials).

Many of us will grit our teeth and vote again for the lesser of the two evils. The Millenials will probably just not vote.

Most of us at DU do not see Clinton as a progressive on many issues and in the totality. I believe she is similarly out of step with the beliefs and stated positions of her church, the United Methodist Church (UMC).

I was reminded today of several issues where her actions and positions are in direct opposition with mine and with the official ones of the UMC. I then reread all of the UMC statements.

Clinton has often discussed the importance of the Church in guiding her life and her actions. In some areas I believe that is true; in others, she is far from the teachings of the UMC.

(The UMC is very progressive on most issues. In a couple, not as much as I and most US members would like. For example, same sex marriage is not sanctioned mostly because of opposition from African members. Changes must be approved worldwide.)

I plan an OP discussing this at length. Here are a few examples for now:

UMC strongly opposes the death penalty in all cases; Clinton supports the death penalty in some cases.

UMC opposes war; it recognizes and supports members who are absolute pacifists and others who oppose war except as the absolute last alternative. UMC was strongly against the Iraq war, the IWR, US intervention in other countries, etc. Clinton has strongly supported these in nearly every case.

I don't care if she has a Bible in her purse, I wish she would follow the teachings of her own church.

The Clintons may not have killed my uncle Gary. But, I don't know that they didn't. I should know for a fact that they didn't. No one will ever be able to tell me unless they know for a fact that no blood with the AIDS virus in it went to a hospital in Jackson Michigan. My uncle received several blood transfusions so we don't know even when he got the virus. I do know this once the news was broken to the family my uncle wasn't too far from being unable to attend family functions.
