Not much I guess but I believe Kasich could be the nominee and would be a threat to Hillary. Cross-over votes from centrist dems.

(3,660 posts)Anecdotally my father-in-law considers himself a Republican. He's not a racist, he has a PhD, he's retired and has seen the benefits of Medicare, etc... basically he shouldn't be a republican at all other than the vague term "fiscally conservative" and having been raised conservativerepublican. His wife is liberal, daughter is liberal, etc... He is dearly hoping for Kasich currently.
He does have some slight interest in Bernie, and I think we could sway him if it was Trump vs Bernie - but he is adamant that there is no way in hell he would ever consider voting for Hillary. Even though he despises Trump, he will gladly vote for him if Hillary is the only other choice.
That said, I think Kasich is seen by a lot of Republicans like my father-in-law as the sensible choice.

(34,498 posts)the contrast with the total nutjobs and narcissists in his party makes him look good.
Take it from someone who lived in OH for more than 15 years - he is no moderate. He just has a nicer veneer than the others. If he were the candidate, which he has no chance of being, IMHO, whoever our candidate is would have plenty to work with. He essentially would be another Romney, without some of his strengths. Either one of our candidates would beat him.

(751 posts)I think they can even afford to screw Trump in the convention and his supporters, and still win with Kasich.
Not that he is any better in policy as he is right wing as they come, but this guy can sell it much better to the public. Guy will be seen as moderate, and even more so in comparison to Trump.
I hope and pray voters haven't forgotten the condition of the country eight years ago. Kasich supports the same failed policies.

(3,017 posts)People who want a conservative would rather vote for the real thing and Kasich isn't saddled with a bunch of scandals and enormous negative personal ratings.
I think Bernie would beat Kasich on the issues. Kasich is trickle down economics and trade deals. He talks about working people but doesn't do anything for them.
