The Revolution vs. Rahm Emanuel: Why Tomorrow’s Illinois Primary Could Remake Chicago Politics

The revolution vs. Rahm Emanuel: Why tomorrow’s Illinois primary could remake Chicago politics
The biggest race could unseat the state's attorney at the center of a brutal police scandal. But that's not all

<snip>

Bernie Sanders’s political revolution blew into Chicago last week and smacked its embattled mayor upside the head. “I want to thank Rahm Emanuel for not endorsing me,” Sanders deadpanned at a rally outside the city on Friday, the same day that a huge crowd of activists shut down a Donald Trump event.

“I don’t want his endorsement!” Sanders told the crowd of supporters. “I don’t want the endorsement of a mayor who is shutting down school after school and firing teachers.”

And up and down the ballot, tomorrow is a big day in Chicago and a major test for the city’s ascendant left.
The mass closure of public schools, a major teachers strike that followed, and continuing protests against police shootings have put two-term Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez at risk of losing her job and, more surprisingly, created the possibility for a Sanders upset in the Illinois Democratic primary. A YouGov/CBS News poll released Sunday had the insurgent democratic socialist, significantly behind in the delegate count despite a string of victories thanks to crushing losses in the South, two-points ahead of Clinton. Just the day before, FiveThirtyEight gave Clinton a better than 99 percent shot of winning.

“It looks like the race has tightened up in Illinois,” chuckled Cook County Commissioner Jesús “Chuy” García, a progressive who last year failed to beat Emanuel after pushing him into the first runoff vote since Chicago switched to a nonpartisan system in 1995. “The impossible seems to be coming to true.”

Across the country, Sanders and Hillary Clinton have fought to attract young black voters amidst a year of raucous protests against police violence. Despite Clinton’s much-maligned history with tough-on-crime measures, she has managed to win overwhelming majorities in the South. But in Michigan, Sanders greatly improved his performance with black voters, fighting Clinton to a draw amongst those under 40. Last week, his campaign rolled out three new ads, featuring García’s endorsement, hammering Emanuel’s education policies, and highlighting his role in the city’s civil rights movement. In Chicago, Clinton’s allegiance with the mayor has provided Sanders with an unparalleled opportunity to attack 21st-century Clintonism as business-as-usual hostility toward the poor and people of color.

“Rahm Emanuel and his negative approval rating, and what he’s done here around closing schools and police brutality, is a taint on anybody that’s associated with him,” says Jan Rodolfo, chair of the board of Reclaim Chicago, a grassroots organizing group affiliated with National Nurses United, a progressive union that has offered Sanders strong backing.

The big local race is the Democratic primary for state’s attorney...

Have you heard any HIllary ads on radio or TV? - I haven't. I do see/hear a lot of Bernie adds in both

I live in the 10th

In the early voting polling place about two blocks from me(I drive by it 2 to 4 times per day) that are Zero Hillary signs. I see Bernie signs (I put one of them up but there are at least 3 others)

Driving to work every day - no Hillary signs to Grocery store in Grays Lake - NO Hillary signs. I do see the occasional Bernie sign,

What are you seeing?

Today, I had to drive for an hour, so I kept it on talk and news radio, and kept count.
12 ads, 3 for Ted Crud, 2 for Teh Donald, 2 for Hillary, one for Kusich, and the rest for local races.

Hillary repeated the lie that Bernie voted against the auto industry in both ads.

Crud's ad had Rush Limpblah talking about his conservative stripes.
Trumpenstein talked about mugging america grate again.

There was one ad by President Obama, for a local state rep race. The current office holder is a black DINO named Dunkin, who votes with and supports Rauner. I have never heard of a president getting involved in a local race, not like that. But if anyone deserves to lose, it would be Dunkin in the State house, followed by Lipinski in the US House.

I only listen to WCPT and I'm only hearing Bernie there, Haven't seen any TV ads for Hill but lots for Bernie

Lots of various republican signs (eh)

How is she going to win in IL with little or no advertising? Inevitability? A friend at ESS? Saving her money for NY and CAl?
I dont' get it unless IL isn't that big a deal to her or she thinks it's in the bag for some reason.

She's given a couple of speeches here but that's about it

Tx for the feed back

Off to phonebank fro Bernie the rest of the afternoon and early evening - again

Garcia was the guy running against Rahm last time around, when Rahm hid the video of the killer cop. He even pushed through a semi-secret settlement for $5 Mill, trying to keep the murder out of the news. He even insisted on a confidentiality agreement from the family.

Had Chewy been facing Rahm with this information out there, we'd be toasting Mayor Garcia. Chewy has been on the air, asking his supporters to vote for Bernie. It is having a large impact.
Be prepared for a surprise tomorrow.

Pollsters ignore the impact that Rahm has on Hillary.

He truly is the most despised man in Chicago, followed by, I think, Trump.

He was my rep before Obama in 2008. I remember him and met him in the neighborhood a few times before then, and then again after he was elected Mayor.

But back in 2006, when W was stinking everything up and NOLA was still under water, Pelosi and a few others, largely because Dr. Dean was running the DNC, engineered a house takeover. Rahm managed to attach himself to that and stood on the podium that day in November 2006 when the Democrats swept the Republicans out of the House. People then said how "smart" he was and what a "knife fighter" he was and macho bullshit like that. It rang hollow then and its looks foolish now. He didn't do anything special in 2006, it was all Dean and Pelosi, he just hung out on their coat tails. He was the DLC guy put there to keep an eye on the actual liberals who did the real work for that victory.

So the only "smart" thing he's done is hop on the coat tails of others as they carry everybody to victory, he, himself, doesn't have coat tails and never will.

16. Why America’s Worst Mayor, Rahm Emanuel, Loves Hillary Clinton
Mon Mar 14, 2016, 02:20 PM
Mar 2016

The corrupt politician's ties to the Clintons go back to Bill's first presidential campaign

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s approval ratings may be the worst of any Democrat in the country, rivaled only by the calls for Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz to resign.

Following the release of video footage showing a Chicago Police officer murdering 17-year-old Laquan MacDonald, evidence suggesting ties between Mr. Emanuel’s administration and a cover up began surfacing. The manager of a Burger King near the shooting claimed Chicago Police confiscated surveillance footage and erased it. Mr. Emanuel’s office also knew about dash-cam footage of the shooting as early as December 2014, but Mr. Emanuel concealed the film until after his primary election. E-mails obtained by The Daily Beast reveal Mr. Emanuel met with lawyers before his election to discuss the video footage, which was only made public after an independent journalist sued to have it released while Mr. Emanuel’s lawyers fought to keep it hidden.

With the State's Attorney seat on the line, you can expect higher than normal turnout which bodes well for Sanders. If he takes Chicago, he wins Illinois.
