2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumNY Times: To make real change, Bernie Sanders needs his young revolutionaries to run for Congress.
Revolution is Bernie Sanderss go-to word. The candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination uses it to celebrate primary victories and explain losses, to rally his young supporters and, most of all, to answer sticky questions about how hell get what he wants.
Asked in Wednesdays debate how he would address climate change, given opposition by Republicans in Congress, he answered: Im the only candidate who says no president, not Bernie Sanders, can do it all. You know what we need? We need a political revolution in this country.
But, as he seemed to acknowledge, revolutions are typically bottom-up, not top-down, events. Mr. Sanderss campaign is powered by $30 contributions and an army of young volunteers, but there are not enough elected office holders in Congress or in statehouses to carry out his revolution through new laws or policies. And thats the big difference between running an inspiring campaign and actually governing.

We cannot depend on establishment politicians at this point. We need a new slew of leftist Democrats who never thought about running for office before actually deciding to run. Sanders has shown that there is true support for his message. We need people running for city council, mayor, governor, senate, etc, etc.

(12,754 posts)3. You're asking a lot
Why would someone put themselves out where the right-wing slime machine can slime them day after day.
Look what Hillary, her hired character assasins, and her followers are doing to Bernie. Would you subject yourself to that?

that this has to be a committed, sustained effort for change.
