contrasted with rural red right-wing ones, well, again, ah.... Illinois.

I mean, someone had to feed Henry Hyde until he was gravitationally substantial enough to roll across the capitol floor blammering about falling flags and whatnot.

Or shit, most of the rest of the country, for that matter.

At least ours don't have any actual power in the statehouse, hallelujah.

When it comes to OR, it doesn't matter, you take Multnomah County, suburban proto-tech enclaves like Washington County, Eugene and the 1-5 Corridor, and the red parts of the state simply don't stand a chance. That's why we've got the first openly Bisexual Governor in US History. Legal Pot. Vegan Strip Clubs.

You guys will catch up, eventually, but there are reasons I moved west as fast as I possibly could, above and beyond the fact that I'll be perfectly happy never to hear the words "minus twenty wind chill" ever again.

Not much bluer than the Illinois map gets, actually (that's a 2012 Oregon map...couldn't find a good one for 2012 Illinois.

I've been to Portland and I like Portland...but no, you don't get the Hawk there, that's for sure.

I remember going out to Oregon in late December of 2001 thinking that I was going to get away from the Chicago cold...flipped it on WGN and they were having record highs in Chicago...came back 9 or 10 days later and as soon as I arrived...so much for that record warmth, lol.

And this is the Midwest...a very different flavor that can be quite progressive, as you well know.

(Kitz was already a damaged candidate for Governor, and he still won. I'm far happier with Kate Brown)

There are reasons for that, some specific to our flavor of progressiveness which I think leaders like DWS could learn from. But a different topic.

Blue/Red Maps are misleading, of course. As anyone who has winnebago'd across this great land knows, there is a lot of empty space in this country, and most of it votes Republican. The blue areas, for the most part, are where the people are.

The Maps for California and New York are not much different.

I hear you about Chicago and Obama, of course. The symbolism of him speaking in Grant Park on election night; I felt he was exorcising the ghosts of '68 there and so much more. It was an electric moment, I still get chills thinking about it.

The faculty and staff at NW is very liberal as is much of the town...which is a mix of everything...but not quite the funky concoction of things that Cambridge is (I prefer Cambridge to Evanston but I prefer Chicago to Boston)...and Cambridge is prettier in the winter time...I'd much rather do my book browsing at the Coop than at the local Barnes & Noble.

North, lake county went Hillary. As did Rockford. I think Rockford polls more to her this season. Our Hispanic population in the burbs definitely broke for Bernie here though.

Further west: Aurora, Montgomery, Joliet, just to name a few, have strong politically active populations in that regard. I'd add Elgin, but population growth and change could be flipping their demo). We also have several collar counties out in the western and southern counties that Bernie carried. Mid-Lower income near farms, plants with lost jobs and wages.

But it's the suburban counties that are interesting. I'm looking forward to taking some time to breaking down W/SW Dupage, especially. It all went for him, but village by village. Like Hinsdale or Wheaton, that would surprise me. Especially Wheaton. I used to live there.

I haven't started looking in to the details on far north yet. Mostly collecting updates from friends in neighboring towns, and starting to breakdown at our county data (overall top votes were 1: BS, 2: DT, 3: HC).

I've also been eyeing reports on some areas that had big voter issues today. A lot of republican clerks need to go! Springfield was a mess. McHenry wasn't done and still hadn't updated from last night, Kane, Kendall, Quincy, Adams. All problems. Story from Kendall was that even after the court ordered the polls to stay open, they closed shop at several locations.
