The Asheville (NC) Citizen Times Endorses President Obama

North Carolinians is Asheville a blue or red area?

...But President Obama entered office with two wars raging and the economy in freefall. The U.S. auto industry was collapsing, and Osama bin Laden remained at large. The solutions to the first two issues were far from perfect, but show progress. The solutions to the latter two we’d say are a success.

Slow progress is better than no progress. We feel the pillars are in place for more, and hopefully quickened, progress in the days ahead.

We feel the best way to continue that progress to re-elect President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden on Nov. 6.

"The Opinion piece is exactly my viewpoint. I am not persuaded by GOD GUNS GAYS ABORTION CONTRACEPTION OR LIBYA. I am much more persuaded by a good memory of what Obama was facing in 2008, when he was elected...AND the constant Republican obstruction headed by Mitch McConnell that deflected delayed, ran out the clock on EVERY meaningful effort to right the ship. A party with leaders who publicly stated their one goal was to make Obama a one term president with no regard for the country are worthy of universal scorn, along with those who support such near treasonous behavior. Ive never seen anything even close to this kind of obstruction. In any event, with the second Obama term, hopefully he brings a few more Democrats back in with him, maybe we can continue the progress...Or at least, keep the status quo, while the birthers truthers, and right wing teabag Republicans dig their doomsday bunkers a little deeper."

The county is more red, with Buncombe Co voting for Obama by 52% in 08. So far in first three days of early voting in the county this week, about 8600 Dems have already voted vs. 3900 Repubs and 3900 unaffiliatiated.

The Winston-Salem Journal endorsed President Obama last week as well. I see much love around here for our great President.

10. Asheville itself is quite blue--as mentioned in #1 response--also very gay-friendly.

The high concentration liberal areas of NC are:

Durham
Chapel Hill/Carrboro
Asheville
Raleigh

The Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area of NC is known as the Triangle and has many well-known
universities. UNC-Chapel Hill/Duke/NC State tend to have a lot of more well-educated
people clustered around them. There are also quite a few smaller, private colleges
in the Triangle--as well as around the state.

Asheville also has a UNC campus.

To a lesser extent Boone (where Appalachian State is) leans blue.

12. Charlotte/Mecklenburg tends pink, IMO, although Mecklenburg went Obama 62% 2008.

Home to B of A and lots of business types.

I'm a little concerned about the vote in Mecklenburg this time around, because
the opposition to the State Constitutional amendment banning gay marriage
was quite weak in Mecklenburg--only 54%--and that makes me
wonder whether BO will lose some votes there this time around.

As comparison, Orange County (Chapel Hill/Carrboro) voted 78.9% and Durham voted 69.7% against
Amendment One banning gay marriage.
