They were a few spots lower with 99 total ships... among that total is 1 active Carrier (compared to our 11), 11 submarines, 6 destroyers, and 13 frigates.

The Wikipedia for the Royal Navy lists only 77 active ships.

They're designed for harrier jump jets, not F/A-18 Hornets. The only country that has a long deck carrier other than the US is France.

Whoops sorry I misread the article. I made mistake and counted the aircraft. During their imperial era they had hundreds of vessels. I guess times change. Then again that play into the narrative of not needing a huge navy in modern times.

The U.S. trails significantly in mine ships, counting both minelayers and minesweepers.

China counts 52 mine warfare ships. The U.S. is listed 13th with just 14 such ships... one less than Britain.

I think we also have air drop capacity for naval mines, however I wasn't involved in that area while I was in.

Something my grandfather would always say to me is whichever country has the strongest Navy will rule the world.

I doubt anything afloat in 1917 remotely compares to an Enterprise-class carrier or guided missle cruiser by any measure.

To compare ships BY CLASS, here's some handy data: http://www.history.navy.mil/branches/org9-4.htm
Note no carriers (our largest ships) are listed until 1924 -- and in 1917 "gunboats" and "steel gunboats" are separate categories. Even if the 1917 Navy had more ships, it would get mauled by today's Navy.
