2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI wish we could elect pundits. These shallow, smug, entitled blow-dried morons need to be replaced
Just a thought after an overload of having the TeeVee machine in the background as I work.
I wish we could oust many of the current crop of self-satisfied parrots and force them to get jobs in the real world, and live like real people for a while. (Maybe instead of getting paid to pontificate, they might actually have to get underpaid work in the trenches of local journalism.)
Perhaps then they would develop a greater sense of empathy and appreciation for the real complexities of life and the challenges that people outside the Elite Bubble have to contend with.

I haven't owned a television since 1990, when I physically up lifted the last one I owned in the middle of a Gulf War I propaganda broadcast and hurled it out a window, smashing it into little pieces on the concrete sidewalk below.

(47,803 posts)Unless one is selected as a ratings household, it doesn't matter what one watches or not.
On a personal level, I can certainly do without watrching. But uinfortunately they control the information infrastructure that drives politics and public discourse.

(1,000 posts)Reducing the overall number of viewers by declining to watch reduces the ad revenue these broadcasts earn by reducing the size of the audience. Being directly measured as a ratings household is not necessary.
Television is the business of attracting the eyeballs that advertisers require to promote their products.
If you want to be more active than passive, you could also organize a boycott of their advertisers, in some cases that has proven to be quite effective.

(63 posts)It is the best thing I ever did. Television had a subtle yet persistent negative effect on my peace and well being. My consciousness feels cleaner now and it is easier to detect the BS. These pundit clowns are dependent on addicted viewers tuning in to see if their favorite or least favorite oligarchical mouthpiece finally gets it. And by the way posting on message boards about the most recent ridiculous statement made by these employees of the same six corporations only directs more attention their way. Yes every vote counts turn them off!
