2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumIt's been about a year since I've been to Italy. Bernie's going to LOVE it!
It's great that he's taking a vacation in the middle what must be a stressful primary schedule. Hopefully he'll get a chance to take in Rome's beautiful sights and historical attractions. Not to mention Italian cuisine. The BEST! Personally, I prefer food from Northern Italy (and that goes for wine as well: Barolo, you own my heart), but lets face it, you can't get a bad meal in Italy. Bernie won't be disappointed.
But a big question is, what kind of vehicle does he rent? Maybe a Vespa? Or a classic Alfa Romeo? Have a great time Bernie! Send us some selfies!

(20,709 posts)Have you been to Santorini? Stunning! It's like the place was designed to sell postcards.
Come to think of it, do you think Bernie is in the pocket of the "Big Postcard" oligarchs?

The most exquisite pasta dishes ever!

(20,709 posts)Pasta is exquisite, all over the country, but what a lot of people don't realize, it's so much more than pasta. Seafood, meat, vegetables, everything. And the cheeses! And risotto! Last time I was there we rented a place for a few weeks so we had a kitchen, not just restaurant food, and the markets there were great. Cheeses and cured meats. Marinated anchovies. Olive oil everywhere. Mmm.

(175,753 posts)I had some grilled scampi once in Venice, the biggest I'd ever seen, with a simple sauce of garlic, olive oil and white wine. I could have eaten a double order, but I controlled myself.
Never stayed any place where I could cook, but have bought fruit from markets. I remember grapes the size of apricots and juicy beyond belief.
Had an invitation to go and stay with friends a year and a half ago. They were renting an old farmhouse about 45 minutes NE of Rome with olive groves and apple and plum orchards. For several reasons, I wasn't able to go and that hurt.

(20,709 posts)And you're absolutely right: simple dishes, like scampi with garlic, olive oil, white wine, and it's like, how can this be so amazing.
Every time I go to a humble trattoria anywhere in Italy, I think, my god, this place would be booked solid in Manhattan! And this is basically the equivalent of a diner here in the US. And it only gets better from there -- modestly deluxe restaurants are killer. For my money, food in Italy is the best in Europe, better than Spain and France even (though those are both great too).
Though I will say one thing. The times I've been disappointed with food in Italy, it's been the beef. I remember once I went to a 2 or 3 (don't remember) Michelin Star restaurant near Milan, and had the whole tasting menu, and everything was great -- a combination of rustic and sophisticated that's rare here in NYC -- but when it got to the beef dish, which was probably the "main" course, it was like, meh.
On the other hand, the risottos in Italy are crazy good. I don't know what it is. I make a good risotto, and I know places here that make great ones, but somehow Italians all have the "risotto gene" or else they practice making risottos from the age of 7.
Next time you go, I recommend checking out AirBnB. I was skeptical, but one of the people I went with had done it before, and we got a truly amazing place for comparable or less per person than a nice hotel. And it was a totally different experience. We could still go to restaurants if we wanted, but also we could go to the store, cook some food, eat outside, enjoy the scenery in "our" own home.

(11,243 posts)Presidential campaigns are VERY stressful, at least that is what I have heard.
What is the weather like there this time of year? Reason I ask, might be too early in the season for the top down on the Alpha, and that would be TRAGIC.
