(35,015 posts)Bernie Sanders plans to warn against the idolatry of money in a speech at the Vatican next week which the Democratic candidate hopes will align his insurgent presidential campaign with the moral preaching of Pope Francis.
What the pope has been clear about is linking the issue of morality with the global economy and making the point that you cant have a moral economy when so many people are living in poverty, Sanders told the Guardian.

(6,645 posts)It's a global symposium where people as varied as economist Jeffrey Sachs and philosopher Russell Hittinger and sociologist Jose Casanova present papers that are then discussed by the participants. It's an exchange of ideas by people about what the social, economic and social changes have taken place in the last 25 years that the Church should be responding to.
Sounds fascinating and a wonderful opportunity for thinkers across many areas to exchange ideas.

I am sorry that Sachs has set Sanders up to be embarrassed in this way.

(6,645 posts)What to do about it. This is about changes in the world that the Church wants to address. So they will be talking about things that have happened in the past 25 years from an economic, social and cultural standpoint.
Where do you get the idea that Sanders would give any information from a Catholic perspective. He brings his own perspective.
And what in the world does this have to do with Jeffrey Sachs setting Sanders up. Sachs said he helped the Vatican reach out to Sanders. Not the other way around.
Why do you care so much that there are dozens of threads about something that Clinton fans think is so unimportant.
Spend some time being happy about all the great things that Clinton is doing on these days.

Don't worry - we understand these are issues your team knows nothing and care nothing about.
Bernie's got it covered. Your team can go steal more Haitian aid money for their corrupt friends while children starve in the streets. Or listen to the whine of the money lenders in the temples of Wall Street.
We know you don't get it. Fortunately, we do.

(8,352 posts)who will be in the Bay Area squeezing the Clooney's and a venture capitalist for more quid pro quo funds, Sanders actually walks his talk. He will be participating as his entire campaign is about economic and social justice. He will be around others in the word who actually are concerned about the morality of economics, while Clinton is demonstrating yet again the immorality of money.
Yeah, we are not the embarrassed ones.

(26,117 posts)Jeffrey Sachs, a Columbia University professor who is presenting at the event, said in a phone interview that he helped the Vatican reach out to Bernie Sanders in March, and he doesnt know why Archer alleged that the Sanders campaign initiated the gig. The academy sent the invitation, its pure and simple, he said. A lot of people in the Vatican respect him a lot. He is speaking in the same kind of moral themes that Pope Francis, and the social teachings of the Church, promote, which is a moral economy. A representative who works with Sachs also passed along an official invitation from Sanchez Sorondo to Sanders dated on March 30. But even though the invite appeared to come from an official Church body, that doesnt mean it came from Pope Francis, and a spokesperson for the Vatican said it hasnt been confirmed whether the senator and the pontiff will have a sit-down in Rome.
But although the venue isnt much like the small-town high-school gymnasiums where Sanders has spent much of his time in recent weeks, this is another moment of Bernie being Bernie: taking any chance he can to decry the ills of the capitalism and the global economy, and to advance his vision of social justice.
