(11,573 posts)None of them possesses the level of ecpertise in Catholic theology or social justice doctrine to attend an academic seminar on the subject as anything but an observer, if they went at all.
The same is true of Bernie Sanders. He's not going to speak, he's not going to meet with the Pope, and his greatest opportunity to participate will be to ask questions.
But the event has been way overhyped by Sanders and his followers. That's what Hillary supportets are laughing at.
This is just another cheap trick by Devine and Weaver, nothing more. Bernie goofed when he said "yup" when asked if he would meet the Pope, and it has went down hill since then. This was a big mistake for Bernie.

(1,166 posts)it turns out that first reports in the media about this had it wrong, probably because it's listed on the list of Clinton campaign speeches. The reports were updated, apparently, later today. However, it is nonetheless instructive that while Bernie is attending a conference on global economics and environmental sustainability there is a $2700 Clinton fundraiser taking place in Hong Kong hosted by Gary Gensler who, before being appointed as chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (until 2014), was a partner at Goldman Sachs. When I think "idolatry of money," Goldman Sachs comes immediately to mind! Goldman Sachs: king makers and king breakers.

(1,235 posts)we'd refuse to accept that the original story was wrong, or we'd blame Hillary for lying about how she was going to give a speech in Hong Kong.

(1,890 posts)You probably never noticed this but Bernie's not very hoity toity. I'm sure he won't mind if he's listed under "other participants" or if his photo and bio aren't included. Now if it were Hillary...yeah that would be a problem. And because you are a Hillary supporter I can see why you would notice something like this and why you thought it would make a good op. After all even Chelsea requires certain things before she will consent to speak to a group so I can see why you thought this was real important information to share.
A college balks at Hillary Clintons fee, books Chelsea for $65,000 instead
In e-mails with university officials, Clintons aides closely edited the texts of news releases, marketing materials and introductory remarks. Clintons representatives instructed that a line about her being the daughter of Bill and Hillary Clinton be deleted from one news release and that her title of vice chair of the Clinton Foundation be added beneath her name on an electronic flier. Other materials mentioned her parents, however.

(9,289 posts)Maybe you have never been to an academic conference before, but I have been to many, and the purpose is to engage with other on the issues being discussed, not to merely listen to the papers or lectures that are presented. And that would be especially true of those who are personally invited.

Nanjeanne
(4,921 posts)So here I go again.
I am speaking as an event producer who has done many large and small types of corporate and other events.
Agendas are very fluid. What is initially proposed and put out typically will change as additional participants are added or, for whatever reason, leave.
This is not the kind of "conference" you seem to want to think it is. It is a small roundtable type conference where important thinkers with varied backgrounds from economic, social and cultural expertise come together to give information and stimulate conversation. The Church will take this information to help them formulate how they respond to this changing world.
Based on the current agenda it appears that Speakers are invited to give a paper (or selected from papers that are given to the organizing committee). Other speakers are also giving viewpoint on the originating paper. Discussion from all attending is followed which allows a good give and take. If that was all Sanders was doing - it would still be a fantastic opportunity for him to give perspective and - I bet from Sanders standpoint - even more important - learn from experts in many fields.
But it is not all Sanders is doing . . .
Originally an agenda was made based on a preliminary agenda (and I can tell you that we usually have many many iterations of preliminary agendas - so I have no idea where this last one stands in the overall scheme of things). Perhaps Senator Sanders was not able to definitively confirm he could be there (perhaps he was waiting to iron out the logistics of the debate and his rally in Washington Park). Since his acceptance - he has now been offered the opportunity to give a talk about the Idolatry of Money. I would expect that the agenda might change a few times before the 14th.
So basically your entire OP is garbage. But then you knew that. You have lots of experience - as I think this might be your 12th or 13th try at it.

(1,306 posts)....promote this idea, our economy treats profit over human life as an essential part of its identity. I think the Pope, like Bernie, are trying to Save Capitalism from itself, from lessening wealth inequality, from putting humanity first over the zero sum economics that now dominates to the detriment of society as a whole. As the wealthiest country in the history of the world it makes no sense that we still have so much suffering from poverty, unemployment and homelessness. There is something fundamentally wrong with the way the world currently operates.
