2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumPopegate has become one of my favorite Bernie campaign screw-ups.
Because now that the "invited to meet the pope" thing has been exposed as a fraud, he's kind of in a tight spot. His choices are:
1) Go to an obscure academic conference that Jeffery Sachs wrangled him an invitation to, missing a couple days of campaigning right before the primary, and suffering more press coverage about how he wasn't actually invited to meet the pope contrary to what he said on national TV.
2) Pull out of the whole thing, and come across as confused and incompetent.
What's it gonna be?

I'm sure the alternative and false narrative would have been preferred by the Sanders supporters. This is a very clear example of the BS supporters wanting so badly to believe, and that internalizing and accepting a false narrative is especially important to promoting their candidate.

(12,504 posts)No one on the Hillary side completely ignores the narrative that has been talked about Hillary for 25 years. BS Supportrs are a different breed with a whole lotta belief systems. That constant need and talking points deifying Bernie is particularly troubling IMHO. That is exactly where this subject matter was heading until the Clinton supporters dug a little deeper.

(58,283 posts)What are you talking about? All of the posts on Popegate I have seen relied on media reporting facts about the incident. It appears to be you who have "lapped up" your candidate's statements "no matter how much it has been proved a lie." It now appears pretty clear Sanders was not invited by the Vatican to speak to the Pope, but by a Monsignor (at the behest of Sanders advisor Sachs) to attend (Sanders is not listed as a speaker) a conference in Rome that the Pope has given no indiction he will attend.

(58,283 posts)It says a Monsignor invited him to a conference. The Vatican put out a press release that it did not invite Sanders. As noted in the NY Times:
Mr. Sanders did not initially correct interviewers who suggested that he would meet with the pope, but he later clarified that he had not confirmed whether the two men would actually meet.
Further confusion about the trip bubbled up on Friday afternoon when the Vatican press office made clear that it had not issued the invitation, but that it had come from the academy. It said that there was no indication that Mr. Sanders would meet with Francis.
Meanwhile, Margaret Archer, the academys president, told Bloomberg News that Mr. Sanders had actively solicited the invitation for political purposes.
Sanders made the first move, for the obvious reasons, Ms. Archer said. I think in a sense he may be going for the Catholic vote, but this is not the Catholic vote, and he should remember that and act accordingly not that he will.
But hours later, Monsignor Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, a senior papal official and the academys chancellor, denied that Mr. Sanders had invited himself to the event. He told Reuters that it was his idea to invite the senator.

Hang with superrich elite pimps and hors in the Bay Area, or speak at a conference at the Vatican about economic inequality and the plight of the working class.

The meeting, which is humanitarian in its objects, will be held at the Casina Pio IV, the headquarters of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, from 15 to 16 April 2016."
But Archer, an English academic, appears not to have known about the invitation. On Friday, she accused Sanders of monumental discourtesy for not contacting her, telling Bloomberg that he was the one who had made the first move regarding the meeting and for obvious reasons.

And just to top it off, Sanders was invited to a conference on poverty and the need to stop worshipping money, less than a year after Clinton's invitation for the pope to attend her foundation was flat-out refused.

(173 posts)It's obviously a big honor for Bernie to be invited, regardless of whether he'll have an opportunity to talk with the pope.
Your feelings are understandable: Hillary wasn't invited, and we don't fully understand why. It just doesn't seem fair on the surface.
But here's what Sorondo said yesterday, which helps shed some light:
Archbishop Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, the chancellor of the PASS, said he extended an invitation to Sanders because he seems to have a "real interest" in studying the papal documents issued by the pope. He did not issue invitations to the other presidential candidates.
"I don't see the other candidates quoting the pope in their campaign. I don't know if the other candidates are interested in the documents of the pope," he said.
So maybe next time if she expressed more interest?
SunSeeker
(58,283 posts)rachacha
(173 posts)It seems pretty clear to me. Sorondo had the idea to invite Sanders (as he has stated), then he reached out through Sachs because he knew he knew Sanders.
I see you're interpreting the phrase "helped the Vatican reach out" as "asked the Vatican to reach out", but the actual quote from Sachs does not imply that.
SunSeeker
(58,283 posts)Here's a link to the program. Sanders is listed on the last page as a "participant." Sachs is featured as a speaker at the start.

Take MTA NYC Transit's "A" train going to Far Rockaway. MTA fare is $2.75 (cash or MetroCard), except for $3.00 when a single-ride ticket is purchased. An additional MetroCard fare of $5 is required to enter the AirTrain system. Disembark from the subway at the Howard Beach/JFK Airport Station. Follow the signs to AirTrain and swipe your AirTrain MetroCard to enter the system. Travel time via subway and AirTrain is approximately 6075 minutes from Lower Manhattan to JFK. Travel time from Howard Beach Station to JFK is approximately 15 minutes.
