2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI never used to use 'ignore'.

I have learned to love 'Ignore'.
I used to get stressed and want to respond to posters that expressed ugly/foul/illogical sentiments over and over. It was causing ME stress.
It took me some time, but I realized something....Why should 'I' be stressed out due to 'their issues'?
I now have over 150 on 'ignore'. It feels great !! It is rather comical to see an inflammatory post that I click on that has only reply posts 3 and 9 listed... I have erradicated the stress that I felt due to desperate posters!!
I check the profile page of those who express ugly or nasty sentiments - I go to 'transparency' first - 80+% have many nasty hides. ALL are on ignore now. If they have no transparency page I look at their posts and rec's... I have added a few long-timers to 'ignore' - sadly. They made no sense and were throwing 'monkey poo'.
I have been here since 2003, and have not utilized the 'ignore' function. Glad I re-discovered it last month!!
BTW - GO BERNIE!!!!!

(80,708 posts)but I agree, in some cases it's just not worth the headache of trying to wade through the bullshit and parse the gibberish.

(19,139 posts)...it's just not gonna happen. I am sick of trying to do the impossible. Those that support her are desperate and deluded.
As a 50+ female I should be in her 'base'... but I have a few brain cells to rub together so I am not.
Loving 'ignore' !!
That said - if she gets the nomination I will vote for her....
I am a realist.

Because you're a "realist".
Add me to your list please.

(80,708 posts)It's been a good solid couple of years, despite repeated attempts... but one of these days someone will get lucky.

(80,708 posts)Wouldn't be the first time.
If I am, fuck it, I'm gonna start using that bad boy.

(55,981 posts)a punishment but I actually don't mind. I use the ignore function because some try to use ridicule to get under ones skin. Not that I care, I've been bullied most of my life one way or that other, but it doesn't get tiresome.
Agschmid
(28,749 posts)I'd rather see all of this.

(28,749 posts)Do see me running around and insulting other DU members? I'm not, and my transparency page isn't showing.
It's pretty easy to avoid all that.

(3,146 posts)You have to be extra special annoying for me to put you on full ignore. I think there are about ten on m list right now. Not seeing them just makes this a more peaceful place for me.

(19,139 posts)with trolls.... not including long-time DUers w/a difference of opinion.
Why should I feed the trolls or let them feed off me when I feel a desperate need to respond? Sick of that game.
I have eradicated posters that are illogical and/or just plain nasty.... I have better things to do w/my time, and I have a low tolerance for stupidity.
Why allow a 'democratic' message board to stress me out? I am 'deleting' those that have nothing of any intellectual value to offer me.

(19,139 posts)...those are the ones I am 'ignoring'.

(4,982 posts)For me, I started using ignore only in the last month or so.
I use it to get rid of the extremes. These are not posters who I just simply disagree with. That I can deal with. I am getting rid of the users who seem to be nearly 'mindless'. Almost as if I am conversing with a robotic minded user that isn't using any common sense at all. The sentence structure is usually very odd, and the repetitive questions and responses make me realize it is just a game to them.
I initially felt like it was my weakness and shortcoming.
Not anymore.
I am enjoying DU much more.
And I am staying current with news, and having great conversations again.
But, as I described in another thread, I fear someone placed me on ignore based on a poll and how I voted. I was not alone in my vote, but it was not the majority view. I also commented to explain my position. But, again it was a minority view point. In fact, someone even commented that the poll would be a good way to build a users list of "full ignore" candidates. So, I think I have been put on at least one persons ignore list, and for that I am very very sorry.
It is a loss for me because I always enjoy this user's posts and used to get responses to my comments in their threads. Now, crickets.
Again, I use ignore very juduciously. But, others might be using a broader brush..
Ah well. We live and learn.

(39,720 posts)I'm thinking they should also start using the ignore feature. Creepy fellow, that one.
Agschmid
(28,749 posts)I'd rather see what crap gets posted.
And I wouldn't call that harassment.
But hey it's apparently really fun to be very dramatic around here.

(9,385 posts)Flame bait goes right in there. Certain posters' threads go directly there too, because their posts are always contentious and pointless as well. I'm not going to do them the favor of kicking those threads to argue with people who have nothing to say.
I almost always trash all the social justice warrior garbage too. Most of them refuse to give others the same consideration they demand for themselves, so I'm not interested in their "cause".
I have some topics automatically trashed by keyword, so I never see those, but there are few of them.
And certain forums/groups I have trashed entirely as well.
It cleans up the environment nicely. But I agree, you have to do something or it's too squirrely to be useful.
I like this way better because then in the threads I AM reading, I can see who has posted and get the gist of what they're saying even if I don't click on their post. And then too, I have that option but I rarely do it.
I'm glad you've found a method that's working for you, though.

(6,007 posts)I don't mind a conversation, a disagreement on issues, etc. But there were WAY too many people who didn't want any discussion they seemed to only want to annoy people, to say things just to inflame someone.
At some point, if you have a brain, you have to come to the realization that some people don't want to figure out the truth.

(1,054 posts)one was for posting a UK article that a US poll showed Clinton supporters were more likely to vote for trump she she didn't win than Bernie supporters - I simply posted 3 paragraphs of the article and the title and link.
I still don't know why it was hidden since it was news on a poll result.
The other one was for a comment back to a Hillarian who said I used a RW talking point. Guess you can't call Hillary dishonest.
I've put every Hillaryian I've ran into since on ignore and guess what, no more hides.

(68 posts)in respectful discussion. Agreed there's a lot of disrespect to see here, even if you're trying to avoid it! It would be nice to critique the policies only, not the supporters, e.g. "Those that support her are desperate and deluded."
I like to read everything too, and it is hard to sift through without getting irritated.
Personally I'd love to see the candidates referred to as: Bernie, Hillary, Sanders, Clinton. That would reduce the inflammation.
alittlelark
(19,139 posts)but that is my sense of it.
Anyone that wants to can put me on 'ignore'.

(28,749 posts)It's real easy and would stop half the drama.

(10,650 posts)I could name them, but I'd get a hide.
Use it to hide the most obnoxious posters. It does make things better.
Oh Yeah - Go Bernie!!!!!

(19,161 posts)DU is proving that alternate universes CAN exist. Let's say:
Member "Jerkface_16" puts me on ignore because they don't like people who have a habit of posting snarky one-liners (like me). (If there IS a "Jerkface_16" out there, please forgive me. I just made up the name.)
Anyway, at the same time, I put "Jerkface_16" on ignore because all they ever post in response to an obviously well-thought-out OP is "LOL" as the subject, with
as the only text (it just rubs me the wrong way sometimes).
So, to "Jerkface_16", I don't exist.
To me, "Jerkface_16" doesn't exist.
Yet we BOTH exist, just in different universes.
(I don't think I'm going to spend all day drinking nothing but black coffee anymore.
