Its worth remembering that while Clinton infamously voted to invade Iraq, of course, she was also notably trigger-happy during her time at the State Department. These days, youre more likely to hear about Benghazi when the topic of Clinton and Libya comes up, but far more important was the key role she played in pushing for intervention there in the first place.

(10,476 posts)The Greek government issued a note saying the pope and patriarch would be visiting Lesbos on April 14-15 along with Athens Archbishop Ieronymos, and that Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras would join them.
The conference, organized by the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, will be held on April 15 just days before the crucial New York primary, in which Sanders is hoping to upset his rival Hillary Clinton in her home state.

No one is saying he will be at the conference. But he will be in the Vatican on the 15th when Bernie lands. It also looks like his schedule was changed from the dates you listed for a reason.

(146,281 posts)It's more dramatic, though, to fly over there to do it and makes it seem much more important. I still don't see how it makes sense, though, with the election in NY looming. But, it's Bernie's decision, not mine.
It's a good thing, though, that speeches aren't required to be in Latin any longer, probably.

(146,281 posts)He's still going to have to do a red-eye flight to make it in time after the NY debate. It's going to be tight, really, time-wise.
It's an honor, of course, to be asked to respond to a paper at this conference. No question about that. If I were running for President, though, I'd have taken a pass on it, this close to a primary of the importance of NY. It wouldn't have been a priority for me, given the travel issues and the debate.
Rome is 6 hours ahead of NYC. Flight time is 8 hours minimum, plus time to get from the airport to the location of the conference. He's truly going to have to leave the debate and get on a plane as soon as possible to make it there on time. He'll probably need a helicopter to the airport in NYC and maybe one in Rome as well. Further, I don't think there are any scheduled flights available at the time required. That presents more issues.
He can make it, but I'm not sure a 10-minute response to a paper presented there warrants the visit. I looked at the schedule. Logistically, it's a tight situation. Good luck to him.
I don't care whether he goes or not, frankly. It doesn't affect me in any way. I'm just an observer at this point, waiting to see who I'll be voting for in November. Either Democratic candidate will get my vote.

(1,674 posts)or radically insane. They dont know him. If he becomes Pres, the world needs to know him. He isnt there for 10 min and leave,he is dining, mixing, forming friendships and making contacts with like minded leaders. Teleconferencing is very impersonal. Bernie in person seduces frustrated people, gives hope and a glimpse into sincerity.

(1,511 posts)Come to think of it why does he even go to his rallies, when not just teleconference in? Why do teachers even go to teach in classes any more? Why do people go anywhere, F this system, we should all just call it quits, hop in to a pod and Matrix it. I am tired of the Luddites relying on feet to walk, proximity or physical presence!
