Related: About this forumRACIALLY CHARGED Joke by Hillary Clinton and Bill de Blasio Earns SCORN Instead of Laughs
In less than three minutes, a comedy routine between Hillary Clinton and Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York managed to cause a storm of controversy over a racially charged joke. It happened on Saturday night when Mrs. Clinton made a surprise visit to the Inner Circle dinner, an annual black-tie event that brings together the citys press corps, lobbyists and lawmakers. She strode on stage with Mr. de Blasio and Leslie Odom Jr., the actor who plays Aaron Burr in the hit musical Hamilton.
Sorry, Hillary, Mr. de Blasio said. I was running on C.P. time, a reference to the stereotype Colored People Time that drew some cringes from the audience.
Mr. Odom, who is black and appeared to be in on the joke, interrupted: Thats not I dont like jokes like that, Bill. Mrs. Clinton jumped in. Cautious politician time. Ive been there, she said.
The joke quickly made its way around social media as both Mrs. Clinton and Senator Bernie Sanders work to woo black voters ahead of the April 19 primary in New York. Both Mr. de Blasio and Mrs. Clinton have a reputation for running late, but the expression struck some as inappropriate.
New York magazine captured the exchange and asked Does your wife, Chirlane, know about this joke? referring to Mr. de Blasios wife, Chirlane McCray, who is African-American. Salon called the comedy skit cringe worthy. A headline in Gawker read Hillary Clinton Tries to Prove Shes Not Racist with Awkward Joke About Colored People Time.
~snip~
The joke came just days after Bill Clinton clashed with Black Lives Matter protesters who accused him of advancing policies during his administration that hurt African-American communities. A day later, the former president said he almost wanted to apologize to the activists.

You won't be seeing De Blasio at too many functions next to Hillary.....the queen is not impressed.

(1,048 posts)I'm Black and had no problem with this. I say it about myself sometimes and other people. I have white friends who have said it. This is a case of trying to jump on any and every Bill/Hillary "stumble" or statement to try and undermine the Clinton's support from Black voters. Many of the people trying to hype it up don't give a shit about Black people so long as they can get their vote to Bernie. Next....

(1,048 posts)But this intentional flood of posts about any stumble or bumble as it relates to Black voters from Camp Sanders is so transparent. Its mainly an attempt to undermine Black support for Clinton because I'm sure Camp Sanders can't quite figure out why they don't have the majority votes of the most reliable group of Democratic voters. I'm sick of it. You don't care about "CP time"...you only care about how it can paint Hillary in a bad light and hopefully translate into Black votes. Lets tell the whole truth here.

(1,048 posts)Well then I guess thats why I figured Bernie Sanders wouldn't be my guy when he embraced Mr. Anti-Obama himself Cornel West. There's a lot worse shit we can say about him calling Obama the first "Niggerized" President and Bernie Sanders not saying shit about it than a damn "CP"

(1,048 posts)It was De Blasio who made the CP joke...a Hillary surrogate. You talk about her painting herself in a bad light when she wasn't even the one who made the joke. Thus, if you are trying to attach Hillary to De Blasio then I guess I have to tie Cornel West to Bernie Sanders. Try to keep up.

(23,720 posts)The joke was poorly rehearsed and an awkward attempt to pander to POC yet again.

(1,048 posts)regarding it being a poorly rehearsed joke but this hyping it up to be some great racially insensitive horror is ignorant and disingenuous.

(9,522 posts)Vote for Hillary, fine. What i hate is the Clintons cynical exploitation of POC for their own gain. And don't tell me I just want the POC vote for Bernie. I just want everyone to be treated the same as I have all my life. I HATE racism.

(1,166 posts)felt this "comedy routine" was strange enough to comment upon. There were three people involved in that skit, not just Bill de Blasio. I'm sure the Hillary Clinton campaign would rather not have had this "cringe worthy" moment reported on by the New York Times, New York magazine, Salon, and Gawker.

I didn't think much about this gaffe either having read only read about it. After actually watching it.... It's pretty bad. I'm still willing to give the mayor the benefit of the doubt but still. And Hillary just stood there and followed the script. And what's up with the brother in cosplay? All kinds of questions.
Bill Clinton gets no pass from me tho

(1,048 posts)Both sides do it but I'm Blatino and therefore am more sensitive to this brand of bullshit and will call people out on it. I've seen post after post and tweet after tweet from Sanders people criticizing Black voters for supporting Clinton so excuse me if I call bullshit that all the sudden many are caring about "CP" gate as if they give a shit about Black voters.

(55,981 posts)Here are some important points made by Black Lives Activist Ashley Williams:
The 1994 Crime Bill that she so vigorously defended not only expanded incarceration, but stripped funding for college education from prisoners. The Clinton legacy allowed for policies that prevented anyone convicted of a felony drug offense from receiving food stamps or income assistance. Clinton-led welfare reform fundamentally ripped apart the social safety net.
Make no mistake, Hillary Clinton's efforts to push these policies resulted in the continued destruction of Black communities and the swift growth of our mass incarceration crisis.

(8,175 posts)I think we have become a bit too politically correct and take offense at every little thing, I think this was in poor taste. Maybe it was meant to be an ice breaker on the topic of blacks, but there is too much racial tension out there right now and this was very poor timing.
I'm not going to be making an issue of it, and I'm surprised it's hitting the internet in a big wave...I know Hillary supporters will not be affected by it, not even black Hillary supporters.
I think it should just be dropped. I know it wasn't meant to be offensive.
I do wish, however, that to be consistent, Hillary would quit trying to use any off remark or motion from Bernie as a sexist attack, when everyone knows it was never meant that way.
Maybe this is tit for tat.

By March 26th, she led Sanders among African-Americans by just nine points.
And today, Public Policy Polling, a widely respected polling organization, released a poll showing that Sanders leads Clinton among African-American voters in Wisconsin by 11 points.
Its all part of a dramatic national trend that has seen Clintons support among nonwhite voters dwindle to well under a third of what it was just a month ago not nearly enough support to carry her, as it did throughout the Deep South, to future electoral victories in the Midwest and Northeast.

Just like the rest of her free-fall with minority voters which already started last month.
Between Bill & BLM, De Blasio, superpredators coming to heel, mi abuela, etc., finally smart people are seeing through the pandering and the lies.
It is not too late, Tarc, join us on the right side of history.

But the #FeelTheBurn crowd is calling it racist, because if theres one thing a wildly passionate white Bernie supporter is good at, its claiming that a pro-Clinton white is a worse white.
