Privilege, Feminism and the Class Struggle

Another excellent report from The Archdruid, dated April 6th.

When a working class sister asked a question about improving the conditions of working class the response was crickets. American feminism was made a political issue by white women for white women.

Modern American feminism is about the glass ceiling oppressing women in the salary class. Improving economic conditions for women in working class industries would mean "paying more eachmonth for daycare, hairstyling, fashionable clothing and the like."

I am not able to make links operate. You all know how to find The Archdruid Report.

Go . . .read .. . learn.

3. Interesting- thank you! I know I am glad to read more frequently about all the unpaid labor

we are expected to do, the caregiving that goes uncompensated. I think that is something we need to do something about soon.

7. Caregiving in any context is underpaid

Whether it is in the home or professionally, it provides virtually no benefits or longterm security. We need changes at a basic, legislative level so that these jobs, which are critical to a thriving society, are compensated fairly. Right now, it is minimum or no wage, uninsured and no possibility of retirement, ever. Women comprise the largest segment of unpaid labor and poverty.

Thank you for an excellent article.

5. Modern feminism has become "middle class white women with pet peeves"

At least, as far as media attention goes. But also on the internet. You comb through the internet, various websites, tumblr, etc.

Intersectionality is just too rarely in evidence.

I think my favorite, "Did you just write that out loud?!" moment is when Jezebel posted an article about the sexism of office air conditioning. It caught on, and people had a serious debate about this.

Women being adequately paid, a strong social safety net, the increasingly terrifying diminishing of medical choice and support across the country. Yeah, yeah. But, a writer somewhere was somewhat chilly at some point, so let's discuss that for a bit.

*facepalms*

What does it say when ostensible feminist websites get worked up about the representation of Black Widow in Marvel movies? Oh, gee, all the problems are solved, are they? The people who write and foment this nonsense are incredibly privileged. They're fine. So they pick around the edges.

Yeah. Yeah, meanwhile, here on the ground . . .

Women are getting ground into the dust by patriarchy. Choice is under attack as it hasn't been in a generation. The social safety net is not approaching single mothers with support - rather, social services increasingly approach with judgement and skepticism. Independent female thought is being crushed by dogmatism.

It's a mess.

But flip on the news, and what kind of story do you see? "Lucy from Elm Street, is the layout of the local supermarket really an attack on you as a woman?!"

Agh agh agh agh agh!

6. Sanders Wants to Reform the Democratic Party

Over at The Smirking Chimp we have been rewarded with an excellent query by Gaius Publius from Down With Tyranny.

Long story short: The conditions Bernie gave for his endorsement if Hillary wins the nomination and his leverage at the convention.
