As opposed to silly ol' Bernie who is, as you know, just talking about something very close to his heart in a meeting of world leaders like a fool

That difficult for Clinton supporters to abide.

(3,017 posts)When asked if it was a smart move to take 36 hours to travel out of the country ahead of one of the most important primary elections in the campaign cycle, Weaver took aim at Sanders' opponent, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
"Hillary Clinton has been out of the state on a number of occasions for high-dollar fundraisers," he said. "We think this is a more important reason to leave the campaign trail for the day."
Bill Press, a Sanders support and CNN political commentator, put it more colorfully: "He may be leaving the state to see the Pope Francis. She is leaving the state to see the Pope George Clooney in California ... So both of them are leaving the state.
He also pointed out that Sanders will get "a lot of media attention" on the trip. "I think it's good for him. I think it's a great platform."

(2,549 posts)Not to detract from Mr. Clooney as a talented actor, writer, director, etc., but really -- on the international stage who rates more coverage, him or the Pope?
BernieforPres2016
(3,017 posts)George Clooney and his wife versus the Pope is probably a close call. This Pope is something of a rock star, so he probably gets a slight edge.

(1,306 posts)The Casa Santa Maria is a residence in Rome, Italy that serves English-speaking priests who are sent by their dioceses for graduate level studies in the city.
Perhaps he's resting....is he staying the night?
MADem
(135,425 posts)Yes, it IS a dormitory....
It's the dormitory where the POPE lives.
He doesn't live in the Papal apartments. He lives in the dorm. It doesn't just serve "English speaking priests" -- it serves any and all religious visitors to Rome, to include lay leaders, nuns, priests, etc. Anyone who has business at the Vatican and CAN'T AFFORD the high prices at the Intercontinental or one of those jazzy hotels on the Via Veneto.
Someone must have made a nice donation to the church to get a spot in there!

(12,685 posts)"Dog and pony show" is a colloquial term which has come to mean a highly promoted, often over-staged performance, presentation, or event designed to sway or convince opinion for political, or less often, commercial ends. Typically, the term is used in a pejorative sense to connote disdain, jocular lack of appreciation, or distrust of the message being presented or the efforts undertaken to present it

(1,306 posts)For two seats at the head table with Clinton, George Clooney and his wife, attorney Amal Clooney, at an April 15 fundraiser, a couple must contribute or raise a whopping $353,400 a huge ticket price for a hard-dollar fundraiser.
Then tomorrow in LA (not sure if she's going) there's another fundraiser of the same type.

(135,425 posts)There's also this thing called Google. A lot of people here on DU like to ask snarky little questions in an attempt to play "Gotcha" when, if they really just wanted information, they'd go to that Google-y place and get all the info they needed!
I have been a member here since this site opened. I've seen a lot of people come and go. I can pretty much tell who's for real, and who isn't. And, surprise, surprise, there are a lot of people who don't give a shit about DU as a community. I'm not one of them.

(135,425 posts)Thus far, though, it's been a series of missteps. What should have been a great rally in Washington Park turned into a sexist name calling hot mess. It's like they can't EVER be positive about their own candidate. They only get a charge when they're throwing names like the "W" word around.

(6,409 posts)Bernie's visit to the Vatican gives him some credibility. The Clinton campaign stresses the outsider aspect of Bernie's candidacy, the fact he has not many endorsements, is not connected with respected and established people, and so on. Any association with anyone with any clout undermines the "Bernie is nobody" meme.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
