At last - a major media outlet gets beyond the Sanders PR.

This was a headline in Google News. It's Google News that's the "major" outlet, not Quartz.... whatever that is.

http://qz.com/663579/the-pope-met-with-bernie-sanders-out-of-politeness-and-good-manners-he-says/

Again, to Bernie supporters that ask what problem I have with Sanders' "meeting" the Pope. The problem I have is the spin. The implication that there was more of a connection between the two than there is. It is a spin designed to appeal to Catholics in this country. New York Catholics first and foremost at this point.

The Pope, and probably God, too, would sure like to see Bernie elevated into his proper place as POTUS.

The press from this event was basically free and the same amount of press, if bought, the price would have been ten times as much. So Bernie comes out ahead all the way around.

The international exposure was ten times the pittance the campaign laid out for the flight, etc. Now people the world over have heard of Bernie, some for the first time, and once he is in office the reputation endowed by the Pope, and probably God, too, will ensure the people respect him as Bernie makes world peace and begins to limit income disparities.

The Pope, and probably God, too, appreciate your concerns.

Sat Apr 16, 2016, 10:55 PM
Apr 2016

I'm asking a real question, because just the term alone suggests that could be a possibility,. There isn't a Republican out there that I would vote for, ever. They never deviate from the party line and are so anti women, LGBT, people of color, that I could never in good conscience cast a vote for them. They continue to try and rig voting to favor their party at the expense of the people of this country and we, the collective we, have allowed it to happen. So please explain why you call yourself and Independent. I don't believe that is really a political reality.

You're trying to set up a gotcha situation and it's in very poor form. That you're focused on the individual here on DU that points out the realities of polls out there (showing Clinton behind every other candidate and slipping) How are you proposing to heal the rift in the Democratic party that has formed? The only thing Clinton has to offer most people is that she's not as bad as the other guys, and that may not be enough to motivate the Dem base.

That's the real question here.

98. If Trump decided to run as a Democrat than an Independent could vote for a Republican
Sun Apr 17, 2016, 06:04 PM
Apr 2016

To keep Trump out of office.

Years ago when the Republicans were not so rabid the Independents looked at the candidates individually as well.

You could look for leadership qualities, background, personality, actual qualifications for the office vs. The other candidate. It also depended on the state of the country. If it was in economic turmoil it might be the time for somebody who would be strongest in that area. In war time a General might look good.

Now though the Parties on both sides have changed so radically that more people cannot feel totally aligned with either one.

Independents are a party within their own right. They are the anti Democrat and anti Republican bullshit. They are the people that were more believers of politics before they became so rabid. That is why Bernie Sanders is attracting so many Independents. He is talking about things that actually appeal and apply to voters with authenticity.if a Republican Candidate candidate came along that wanted to revolutionise the Republican Party and do some of the things that Bernie Sanders wants to do then some Independents would vote for him or her. It is about what the candidate stands for, stood for, if they are establishment.....

Independents can be more leaning to liberal and more leaning conservativeeven so they could and most likely would vot for the "other" side if there was enough appeal.

After all it is really what is best for the country

http://www.democraticunderground.com/12511753389

REASON FOR ALERT

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.

ALERTER'S COMMENTS

Joking about mental illness is not funny, using it to smear other members is illiberal and adds to the stigma of those suffering from mental illness.

JURY RESULTS

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Sat Apr 16, 2016, 10:16 AM, and the Jury voted 4-3 to HIDE IT.

Juror #1 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Stalking is a serious problem, and to use it to try to make some grade-school political points is worthy of a hide.
Juror #3 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Hiding not because of alerter's comments (the Pope made the first reference) but because the spin is so strong the whirlwind makes me sick.
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: He's quoting a linked to article. Not sure if that's the Pope's real words or not. Doesn't appear to be a satire site.

If these were the poster's own words I might see a hide justified but not in this case. How about rebutting the article instead?
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: I am really getting tired of people abusing the Alerts because they don't agree with what is said. The poster was quoting the Pope and not attacking anyone in particular.

Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

in Hillary Clinton's hair that we have to hear about all the time. Every word is examined, dictionaries consulted, the worst possible meaning ascribed to every utterance. LIES! IMMORAL! we are demanded to think.

Sanders says "We had an opportunity to meet with him. It was a real honor for me ... to spend some time with him." This leaves an entirely different impression than the reality of a five minute stop-and-chat, more like: "We had an opportunity to meet him. It was a real honor for me to express my admiration for him."

Why the big surprise from the worst Hillary nitpickers that Sanders should get a little nitpicking in return? So what.

So Sanders announces he is invited by the Vatican to speak and on the View when asked "so you're going to meet the Pope" says the dreaded word "Yup".

#1) The Clinton campaign tries to paint the picture of Sanders FORCING himself to be invited. That gets completely debunked. Clinton's campaign left with egg on face.

#2) The Clinton campaign starts throwing around the "Yup" as if it is some horrible lie Bernie told, when anyone with common sense could figure out he would much more likely than not meet the Pope because this was a high level conference on the Pope's signature issues.

#3) The Clinton campaign ends up with more egg on its face as Sanders ACTUALLY meets the Pope, just as he said.

Now they are trying to squirm out of it by returning to #1 and claiming it was an ambush, which is even more laughable this time.

So yeah, the Clinton campaign really bungled it, because they would have been far better off saying nothing than doing what they always do.. try to make EVERYTHING into a scandal and then look like fools when it turns out not to be.

to do with the OP OR my post.

tl;dr

Start your own OP. This mini-rant makes no sense whatsoever.

This was a misrepresentation from start to finish. Period. Mr. Clean is getting called on it, and rightfully so.

Either defend it or move on.

This Because Hillary nonsense is a non-answer.

Now it is has driven her supporters into a total frenzy.

According to the economist Jeffrey Sachs, who has also been attending the conference which ends today, the courtesy visit was prearranged. “Last night the meeting was scheduled for 6am this morning,” Sachs said in comments to CNA. “They had the chance to talk for several minutes.” No photographs were taken of the encounter.

lmao.

If you guys just would've been adults about it and said, 'what a nice gesture', and moved the hell on like normal people, you wouldn't look so ridiculous now. But instead you had make petty denials of reality every step of the way, and be proved liars over and over, every step of the way.

I just don't get it.

that an agnostic/Jew went so far out of his way to meet the Pope in the hopes of winning over a few Catholics. (The meeting was even a joke in the Homily.) I don't think it will have much consequence one way or the other.
