(4,558 posts)yes, Nixon used it in one of his speeches.
It was also used by Calvin Coolidge many decades before Nixon. It was also used by a SCOTUS judge around the turn of 1900.
Originally it had been used to refer to the dead, it has been in use for more than a Century now in the current context.
Cute attempt though.

(26,001 posts)It's quite obvious what the phrase stands for in a modern context.
No wonder you wanted to deflect.

(4,558 posts)On edit I removed the link to the Sputnik. I don't believe in using sites that also promote hate.
The remaining link is a very viable source to promote the same argument though.

(26,001 posts)Such weird, desperate, bitter, childish posting -- no discussion, just the breaking wind of unvetted sources and links -- deserves nothing more than the Ingore List's finest.
Bye!

(4,558 posts)I do concede you were right about the sputnik source not being a good source to use. I did remove it from my own post.

Your other link.. that one is spot on.

(4,558 posts)I didn't see anything substantiating those claims that were made, but it does look like a questionable source to use here at best imo.

On Wed Apr 20, 2016, 12:43 PM an alert was sent on the following post:
If I still lived with my parents, I would go to rallies too. nt
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1251&pid=1791805
REASON FOR ALERT
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.
ALERTER'S COMMENTS
This is completely over the top, to demean Sanders supporters like this? Apparently all of Bernie's supporters live at home in a basement and that's why they attend rallies. Disgusting.
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Wed Apr 20, 2016, 12:54 PM, and the Jury voted 2-5 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: It's childish but hardly rises to a level where it needs to be vanished.
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Who says this is directed at the alerter or a specific person? Very benign compared to most of the rubbish being flung around in GD-P. Grow a thicker skin or avoid GD-P.
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: What a jerk to say things like this to the fellow Dem. Remember the name of this account. Let the sunshine of JUSTICE disinfect its soul.
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Funny and kind of true.
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: actually kind of funny.
Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

(4,558 posts)RE: Post #10.
Nixon did use it. The term in it's present tense pre-dated Nixon's speech by decades.
Nice tries at false equivocation.
My Good Babushka
(2,710 posts)The term was popularized by United States President Richard Nixon in a November 3, 1969, speech in which he said, "And so tonightto you, the great silent majority of my fellow AmericansI ask for your support." In this usage it referred to those Americans who did not join in the large demonstrations against the Vietnam War at the time, who did not join in the counterculture, and who did not participate in public discourse.
So you think we should all just shut up and support Hillary, as if she were the Vietnam War- inevitable, but still wrong.
And indicating that people have time to rally because they are "living with their parents" i.e. young and unemployed, it's just hippie bashing.

(37,428 posts)Numbers like that ought to be unstoppable, if they summon the will.
It also needs to expand so much more than just the Presidency.
It drives me crazy just how much everyone wants to focus on Bernie and Hillary, but seems completely oblivious that either will be EXTREMELY limited in any capability without a shift of Congress.

We show up at the VOTING BOOTH!!!!!
The ONLY thing that matters! Do they finally get the message now?
NurseJackie
(42,862 posts)And they typically vote with enough frequency that the are not marked as "inactive" on the voter registration rolls.
Real voting is a LOT different that online voting. We get that. Showing up at the polling place takes MORE commitment than simply slapping a bumper sticker on your car.
Being a member of the party (in good times and bad, through joys and disappointments) gives one much more influence than those who change their party affiliation to "Independent" on a whim, because they're angry about something, and to "send a message".
I wonder if THOSE people got the message.
