Related: About this forumSo how do you feel about Hillary's call for automatic registration?
WASHINGTON Hillary Clinton in a speech on Thursday called for universal, automatic voter registration, saying every citizen in the country should be automatically registered to vote when they turn 18, unless they opt-out.
Clinton spoke at Texas Southern University in Houston, where she was receiving the Barbara Jordan Public-Private Leadership Award. She also said Republican-led efforts in several states to further regulate voting and voter registration disproportionately harm both underrepresented communities and young people, adding that Republicans need to stop fear mongering about the phantom epidemic of voter fraud. (5,792 posts)"Revitalizing the electoral process is, in some ways, a simple matter. If the goal is to get more people to vote--and that certainly should be one of our goals--then it is high time we establish automatic voter registration for every American who is 18 or older. Given the growth of technology through the "information highway," a social security card or driver's license should be all that is required for voting. Same-day registration, allowing every American to register up until election day, would substantially increase voter turnout.
Similarly, we must make it more convenient for people to vote. We can open the polls, as is done in other nations, over a 2- or 3-day period--including at least one weekend day-- so that working Americans will have more time to vote. Oregon has shown us another possible route: in that state, voting can be done by mail over a period of up to 4 weeks, and as a consequence voter turnout has risen.

(740 posts)Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) has said she plans to introduce a bill to move toward automatic voter registration. According to the Brennan Center for Justice, officials in several states, including Minnesota, Oregon and New York, have expressed interest in implementing such a system at a state level.

(9,707 posts)I'd love to see everyone have the right to vote, but wonder how that works in closed primaries. Don't they need to be asked what party they wish to be registered in, if any?

If he hadnt elevated the conversation and brought important issues to the fore, we would have spent the past 8 months hearing a nonstop drone about "the middle class needs a champion because everyday americans deserve a break today with everyday low prices so they can just do it and have it their way"
Etc etc

(6,342 posts)You can register people all you want. But if people aren't engaged in the political process, they usually opt to stay home.
People don't vote for different reasons. They may feel their vote doesn't matter. They are too busy to vote. They feel angry at the political process. etc, etc.. So they sit home. As stupid as that may seem, they have that right. I'm not in favor of laws that force people to vote.

(42,862 posts)... will probably have to make the extra effort to update their registration and declare a party affiliation (assuming that they desire to participate in the party's primary).
But, for the all-important GENERAL ELECTION, this will definitely be a very important step forward in voter rights and encouraging participation.
