What movie captures the true spirit of the Romney campaign?

Or can you use "true" in such proximity to "Romney"?

My first candidate movie is "Peter Pan", because it wants you to believe in fairies, and Mormons like Romney hate fairies.

Next we have "The Wizard of Oz", but there are so many thematic elements that it's hard to pick. For example, the Yellow Brick Road will never lead any peasants (from the 47% or 99%) back to any of Romney's homes. Also, Romney is heartless and cowardly, but the heros in the movie earned theirs, unlike Romney. On the brain category, Romney already has the fancy paper, but seems to be losing his brains now. Or should we take the element of the melting of the Wicked Witch, like the melting of Romney's campaign? But let me leave you with the image of Toto on the top of Romney's car after Dorothy surrenders!

Perhaps "The Sting" would be the obvious movie for Romney? Full of lies, and we can put the voters in the roles of the various victims of the various scams.

Obviously I don't see too many movies these days, or maybe I lack the mappings from minor league movie fantasies to Romney's big league of lies. Maybe it should be the movie where that guy is murdered with the explosive light bulb that sets him on fire? Kind of the extreme extension of Romney's pants-on-fire policies?

What movies do you nominate? Why? Any ideas for poisonous anti-Romney movie-related memes for Twitter? I've been dabbling with the #neoGOPfilm tag there...

20. Are there any famous movies about Teddy Roosevelt?
Sat Oct 27, 2012, 10:33 PM
Oct 2012

That comment reminds me of how so many neo-GOP fanatics want to destroy their opponents and talk about permanent majorities, which then reminds me of the last time the GOP came close to doing that, which was probably stopped only by Teddy Roosevelt's Bull Moose campaign. In relationship to this thread, that raises the question of movies about TR.

I think that one of the biggest differences between the parties is that I can't recall any of President Obama's supporters saying the Republican Party should be destroyed or outlawed, though a lot of them have said the neo-GOP extremists are not real Republicans. I even agree and that's a big reason I regard them as fake conservatives.

Yes, now I remember seeing that, but I think the same scene was used in an earlier movie where the victim was an arm's dealer. Actually, now I wonder if Bain was directly involved in any military deals, in contrast to the big dick Cheney's companies and that company James Baker was involved in.

Oct 2012

A number of interesting candidates mentioned so far. I think "Blazing Saddles" is highly relevant, but it has me locked on the badges theme... "We don't need no stinking badges!" However, if we consider Romney as a foul-tempered badger, then maybe it should be that movie with "We don't need no stinking badgers!"

I should have thought of "Plan 9 from Outer Space", but actually that reminded me of "Ed Wood", perhaps with Romney in the title role... Or perhaps not. Johnny Depp is sincere in every role he plays, and Romney is like Nixon and looks untrustworthy almost all of the time, even if he's telling you the sun is shining at noon.

However, the title I wanted to add now is "Dracula", because he couldn't stand the sunlight, and Romney's lies are also allergic to reality. I haven't been following these recent vampire films, but my understanding is that the new vampires can tolerate some sunshine. Are they using suntan oils with high protection ratings?

Sun Oct 28, 2012, 12:21 AM
Oct 2012

I feel like apologizing for the bad pun, but I couldn't help myself.

However that made me think about adding Romney's "holier than thou" Mormon attitude to the long list of things I dislike about him. I don't want to go down the entire list, but I'll just start by saying that #1 is his lies, #2 is his cowardice, and #3 is his greed. The last two are close together, but I really hate liars.

Did they ever make a movie from the Sherlock Holmes story that made the Mormons look so bad? I can't remember the title, but it was one the first ones. Or maybe there are some other movies about Mormons.

talking down the economy, and working people into a frenzy against imagined problems (like "we built that," the President not calling the Libyan attack a terrorist attack, or chrysler moving a jeep factory to China).

And then comes the fake solution to America's problems, not a boys' band, but an empty five point plan.

Wasn't that the movie that lost the most money? "Titanic" was quite profitable, and that's the only thing that really matters to Romney. I think a movie that lost a lot of money will be more relevant to Romney if he loses, assuming we can ever find out about the secret dark money under his campaign...

It basically boils down to an entire nation gripped by fear, who ultimately chose to give up their civil rights and plunged the whole world into war. I can’t think of a better time to examine this history than now.—Ed Gernon

Sat Oct 27, 2012, 11:00 PM
Oct 2012

I just finished watching Boogieman: The Lee Atwater story..

It is a documentary about this man and the really nasty things he did which changed the modern Republican party into the vicious bunch they are today..well worth watching..

One thing that struck me was seeing the same cast of characters including Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, John Sununu and Ann Coulter. It struck me how long these hateful people have been associated with the party and how much they have influenced it.

You can see a younger Tom Delay and Strom Thurmond and hear Thurmond talk about the "N** race and watch the Willie Horton spot.

The attacks on Mike Dukakas and Bob Dole are straight out of the current Republican playbook..and are exactly like what we see today against Obama..

Reagan comes off as a liar and a criminal but no one tops the Bush family for straight out lying and viciousness..

In the end Atwater lost everything ..money..power and health and was shown as he was dying of cancer of the brain.

He apologized for what he did but the damage has been done..and somehow i dont buy his apology and call me heartless but I have not a shred of sympathy for him even at the end.

Just a reply to make your suggested title more visible. That's really a worthwhile contribution, though my mind is boggled by the possibilities. How can you possibly pick which lie to focus on?

Actually, I've still been looking for an ad that features a pastiche video of Romney seeming to say the only truth he really believes and that he would never say: "Vote for me so that government of the corporations, by the lawyers, for the richest 0.1% of Americans, shall rule the earth."

Perhaps it's already happened, but it should be contrasted with what Lincoln actually said, "so that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth." I just checked the text and I see I got one word wrong. The "so" should be "and".

However, that reminded me of "Willard", and I've always wondered if that (bad) movie had anything to do with his dropping of his actual name. I don't much like mine, but I've been brave enough to put up with it for my entire life... I think that running from his first name is just another form of Willard the Mitt Romney's cowardice in all things.

As I think about this one, I'm more and more inclined against. Thurston Howell was fundamentally a nice guy, and that that is NOT Romney.
