2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumTo the Rarest Democratic Voter of them all: The White Man Democrat -- I applaud your Courage!
As a white woman I am still amazed that a majority of white men consistently and unapologeticly vote republican in every election cycle even if doing so goes against their best interests. To this day i STILL can't figure out why. And voting in a Black man as president just compounded their exodus with excuses like "He's from Kenya", "He's Muslin (sic)". Apparently low information runs rampant in that demo.
Maybe its due to an overwhelming amount of courage or simply possessing an IQ above 80, i applaud that rarest of democrat voter lurking here on DU, the white man, because we are on the verge of placing your group on the endangered species list.
Maybe white men just naturally prefer republican BS, explaining their majority. Maybe the same logic can be applied to democrat women where we've held a majority for decades. And so I wonder if the minority of women who vote republican do so because they are victims who can't say no to their abusers -- Stockholm Syndrome? If so then do the minority of white men who vote democrat feel the same way -- being a victim who cant say no to your abusive democrat leaders?

Bringing sexy back!

(114,904 posts)and it hardly takes courage to do so. Plus, it's just partisan baloney that women who vote republican are victims of Stockholm Syndrome.
I'm a democrat and a liberal, but partisanship doesn't seem to have addled my brain.
Kidding, but there is a lot of pressure to "conform" to the standard view.
If nothing else, the OP has made me feel much better about my "hair sprouting up in unexpected places" issues. But no, I'm not going to take credit for being brave, just less racially insane than so many other people.

(6,343 posts)Being a white woman, I know many. Actually, in my circle of aquaintences, there are more white men who support Obama than Romney and I'm no college kid.

I'm a white man who has been voting Democratic since I turned 18, and do not want your "praise" for overcoming my naturally evil white man tendencies.
Maybe you hang around the wrong people or just naturally make stupid fucking assumptions about others.

(1,134 posts)how is that even controversial? Once the Dixiecrats switched over to the GOP, they've held a large piece of the white male pie. That's not even up for debate.

(62,444 posts)Just curious.
Go ahead and explain it in some way that makes sense to use the word "naturally" if you are not referring to some kind of genetic predisposition.

I'm a white, male voter. I'm a veteran, NRA member, NASCAR lover... etc etc etc.
For me it's not about skin color, religion or who their favorite driver is.
It's about policies and the Republicans just don't have any good ones.

(103 posts)Anecdote: The league of women voters held a mock election at a top flight Catholic girls high school in the suburbs of Cleveland, allowing two days of debates, leafleting, and voting. This is a predominantly white, affluent population, but in fact they are mark a subset of women that will disproportionate go on to college and professional callings. They are also the ones whose lives will be most directly affected by unavailability of prescription birth control and other family planning.
I expected a Romeny win, but he captured a 20% margin of victory. I was appalled. When I was a kid, you went to Catholic school because the education was more rigorous and disciplined, but when it was time to deal with the moral / reproductive stuff, mom stepped in with the authoritative veto. Is it really the case that society, as consumers of this crap, is letting the parallel track Catholic education system mold our daughters into 18 year olds who beleive their best interest is to put a man in the white house whose faith treats women like baby machines?
Now I am a sometimes swing voter, but in this election I will be voting a blue slate. I'm a Keynsian fiscal conservative (meaning I would have liked to see tax increases and spending cuts during the Bush boom years to bring down the deficit). I understand the importance of government spending in a recession. I would expect that at $11,000+/year, this high school would be teaching that kind of "advanced" economics to our daughters, not teaching them that God wants more babies in the world and that evolution is phony science. I was taught evolution by a born-again-Christian. She presented both sides and then said, "What I beleive is my personal choice, just as it is your personal choice which theory you believe." And that lesson, not about the science of evolution, but about personal choice, has stuck with me ever since. (And why the church has been to taking the nuns to task for their "disregard" of papal edicts.) I sit on the boundary line of social liberals who would actually consider sending my daughters to a private Catholic school to get a better education than they can in the public system, particularly as public school budgets continue to be cut. The news about the Magnificat mock election makes it pretty clear what a huge mistake that would be!

(33 posts)Judging by the befuddled looks I get when I explain to others (particularly other white, middle-age Texans) that I am and have always been a Democrat, I am considered somewhat of an oddity. A number of years ago, I interviewed for a position with a large law firm and the interviewing partner, who was probably in his early seventies, asked if I was a Democrat or Republican. I told him, and his response was, "Well, we hire queers now, I see no reason why we can't hire a Democrat." I

Sexist, racist, and insulting to a demographic trying to help you. Nice.

Obama represents the whole, Romney represents the individual.
By the way, I'm a white male liberal Democrat.

(72,505 posts)No courage necessary. Just brains, a heart, and common sense.
I cast my vote for President Obama in early voting last week. I voted for him in 2008, Kerry in 2004, Gore in 2000, and Clinton in 1996. I don't think I'll ever vote for another republican. They've become too fucking crazy and stupid...

(3,526 posts)....lots of us fought for liberal causes before we could even vote. In many respects, modern liberalism has roots in what my generation accomplished back in the 1960s.
I bet quite a few people in this thread did absolutely NOTHING while the GOP tore down and eroded many of the rights for which we fought. Now you're finally waking up and seeing the threat, but you want to crap on the people who helped WIN the rights in the first place?
Incredible. Just STFU about "old white guys".

(3,109 posts)I have voted for the Democratic candidate in every election except 1972, except for 1980 when I voted for John Anderson. The only Republican candidate in my lifetime who was worthy of election was Ike. Today's republicans barely acknowledge his presidency. As far as they are concerned he wasn't a Republican but a War Hero.
