2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHillary will show where she is really at with her VP pic.
Since the onset of the primaries, it has become evident to me that there are two wings of the Democratic Party. There is the social justice wing and the economic reform wing. They are not necessarily opposed to one another ; there is a difference in emphasis.Which is good.
The social justice wing includes women, minorities and the LBGT. The economic reform wing is mostly concerned with income inequality.
If Hillary becomes the nominee, and she is going to unite the two wings, she needs to select a VP from that economic reform wing because many in that wing do not trust her.

(3,687 posts)Which one is Clinton in your opinon - social justice wing or economic reform wing?
I wouldn't classify her in either category. She's the Corporate "faction"
Bernie represents social justice and economic reform. Where does Clinton come in to this? The Third Way Corporate faction crowd doesn't really support either...unless they can make some $$ on it.

She's still the old Goldwater girl regardless of who gets buried in the VP spot.

One can be unfavorable regards Hillary Clinton with or without Sanders.
The Democratic establishment should have considered the high unfavorable perception within the Democratic Party and voters at large.
There were no other choices except Clinton and Sanders except briefly O'Malley.
Sanders has been far more successful than just about anyone predicted. But Sanders stepped into a vacuum and had a fresh (and simple to understand) message.
Because of the vacuum and message, Sanders connected with less than a majority but significant number of members of the Democratic Party where Hillary Clinton was unfavorable to totally unacceptable as a candidate for POTUS.

(68,539 posts)more votes and that is the bottom line...if they don't want to vote for the Democratic nominee...are they really Democrats?

(8,764 posts)No place else to vote save Sanders and for a while O'Malley.
I have been a registered and voting Democrat since aging into the vote in 1972; I was politicized in the San Francisco Bay area age 15 in 1968 when first identified as a Democrat. By circumstance of a connection to his family's entourage of friends and close supporters, I got to meet and eat several family meals with Eugene McCarthy and spend time with his daughter when he campaigned in San Francisco.
I encourage liberal folks not to leave the Democratic party and for new liberal party members. I won't vote for Hillary Clinton in the CA primary and I have said I would probably vote for Hillary Clinton in the general election as choose Democrat never GOP or 3rd party.
I am rethinking a possible vote for Hillary Clinton and probably have changed my mind and will withhold a vote for Clinton.
I am a Democrat and plan on remaining Democrat.
I have no severe problem with having minority but not rare opinions within the Party.
I am a Democrat and angry that the neo-liberal party leadership practice politic and policy that is GOP for a good portion of my adult life.
I think the neo-liberals want the liberals to leave the Party. Not me.
Provide me something to support and I will; otherwise I won't. I will be a critic.
I am a Democrat.

(3,795 posts)And she will never pick a progressive for V.P.
Ever.
She would not put a progressive one step away from the W.H., and with that the ability to reform the Dem Party by putting a Party Chair that will actually recruit and fund progressive candidates for Congress. She is not doing that after all of the work she and Bill have done to completely recreate what it even means to be a Democrat.

(3,687 posts)Scary thing is that she's capable of picking a republican to try and triangulate some republican votes. In fact, I suspect that she would be more comfortable with a republican than a Progressive Dem. More ideologically in sync.
Ok now for the fun - Which republican would she pick...........?

(16,086 posts)I was watching one of the news/talk shows on MSNBC while I made dinner.
Some of the panel suggested she could go for a "moderate" Republican to make herself more palatable to that party. At the time, I said "no way", but now, it doesn't seem as far-fetched. Still hoping I'm wrong about that though.

(2,064 posts)U.S. history has shown that in most administrations, the VP is not a player in the decision-making process of the WH.
VPs have usually only mattered when the POTUS has died. Given Hillary's age, there's no guarantee she would complete 1 or 2 terms, so yes, it's important, but I don't want to have to celebrate someone's death just to get a progressive President. I'm never going to vote for HRC, but I wouldn't wish death on her, regardless of her politics.

(15,805 posts)Women, minorities and LBGT, also the elderly, vets and disabled folks, suffer more from income inequality than any other demographic groups. Instead of separating the social classes from their economic needs, the breakpoint would be better set at philosophical differences. This is essentially a purity argument that is debating the remake the Democratic Party according to views of the ultra progressives. This faction wants a stricter interpretation of the ethical, moral and ideological philosophy that would replace the old guard Democrats with a new doctrine that leans decidedly more towards socialism.
Its not a question of which factor approves of Hillary's VP choice in the General Election, but what that person can bring to her campaign to secure her victory over the Republicans. S/he must stand as her strong surrogate as well as demonstrate the individual chops to become the next president. Whatever unity is to be had, will come from whatever bits of philosophical common ground the two camps might agree to share.
RDANGELO
(3,433 posts)The VP pick can help with that.

(15,805 posts)What your describing is appeasement.
From what's already transpired, there's no guarantee that Bernie's ardent fans will find anything that Hillary does acceptable to them. Since they don't appear to be a monolithic group, the VP person who would appeal to every Bernie fan doesn't exist. No, she should not agree to any such extortionary tactics because it would just open her up to even more criticisms from all sides.
I suspect that there's little to nothing Hillary can do to attract Bernie loyalists, that must come from Bernie himself. At some point soon, they will negotiate some lightweight philosophical agreements, Bernie will make a polite show of endorsing her and halfheartedly encourage his fans to join him. Some will, some won't, and that's all fine in politics.
RDANGELO
(3,433 posts)person.
Remember, a large segment of Bernie's fans hate Hillary as much as the Republicans do, and often for the same things. As I said above, no one exists, well qualified or otherwise, that would be agreeable to the Bernie crowd. No matter who it might be, they could not force themselves to give up all the many months they have spent doing oppo research in rightwing web haunts, posting their favorite anti-Hillary hate essays, or setting aside all the repetitious laundry lists of real and imagined grievances they cherish. No matter who she might pick as VP, they've invested too much in tearing her down to ever support her now. No, it's too late, and they just cannot stop themselves.

This GE battle will be ugly and dirty, as Trump pulls up every personal proven (or unproven) error and mistake from the past.
And he will lie about plenty of others...
Hillary should pick the best qualified candidate who can HELP her get the White House in November.
