2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumOMG! FBI Is Investigating More: "Coordinating her activities & ...Clinton Foundation"
The scale of the FBI investigation into Hillary Clintons emails could force the probe past the election, Rep. Darrell Issa told Fox News host Maria Bartiromo on Sunday

But when it comes to investigating "coordinating her activities and President Clinton's activities and Chelsea's activities in the Clinton Foundation, they're probably going to have to leave that until after the election."
Earlier this year, the probe into Clintons email expanded to possibly investigate if operations at the State Department may have been improperly coordinated with the nonprofit Clinton Foundation.

(1,163 posts)I don't see it that way but it defies logic that we'd go with the weaker candidate.

The investigations, hearings, indictments and nightly news reports of Clinton's problems will be endless
If she manages to weasel her way to the WH she will get nothing done because of this ^

(11,366 posts)That said, I certainly don't want this timeline to help elect Trump or Cruz. Clinton has her email scandal, but Trump and Cruz have their big problems too. And the polls show it: Trump, Cruz, AND Clinton have the highest dislike numbers of any major presidential candidates since favorability numbers began to be polled in the 1970s. It's extremely bizarre that the three most disliked politicians of the last forty years at least are the ones winning the primaries so far. If you're a Democrat like I am, and you've come to believe as I do that Clinton committed serious crimes in her email scandal, that this presidential election could be a disaster no matter who wins.
Luckily, there still are other options. This is a completely unprecedented situation of having a major presidential candidate with an FBI indictment recommendation hanging over her head in the middle of the election season. The Democratic National Convention isn't until the end of July 2016, and a lot could happen between now and then. It's been reported that the FBI investigation is winding down and they want to make their decision whether or not to recommend the indictment of Clinton and/or her aides by the middle of May. That still could be delayed two months and have it happen before the convention.
So between now and late July, Democrats are going to have to decide if Clinton's scandal is serious enough to disqualify her to be the next president or not. If the evidence is strong enough and the resulting political mood is strong enough, then either Clinton will have no choice but to drop out or the super delegates will switch their support to Bernie Sanders or someone else.

(6,007 posts)An example is say a middle eastern country who wants a lot of military weapons from the US and hasn't been approved. They've never made any donations to the Clinton Foundation but they make a multi-million dollar donation and suddenly the State Department approves their purchase. Win for everyone. Well, everyone except OUR country.

(1,163 posts)I don't care if it's Issa or anyone else, the very appearance of corruption was foreseeable and makes Clinton so vulnerable as to be deemed unelectable.
Will the delegates see it?
Not likely.
I guess breaking the glass ceiling with a female candidate that loses is worth a GOP win in the general.
Sad, ain't it?

Do you really think he didn't know better? He just admitted that he did. They are as corrupt as the Bush's and I don't want them NEAR OUR WHITE HOUSE. EVER.

(10,529 posts)Above all else, TPTB don't want Bernie; they've done nearly everything possible to stop him.
Hillary is not their ideal candidate, but they prefer her to Trump or Cruz, because she's more controllable.
They'll keep digging up all the dirt they can on her but hold off any actual indictment or the like, because that might throw the candidacy to Bernie. Then, if she's elected, they'll have either a ton of leverage on her or at least sufficient ammo to keep her too busy/distracted to accomplish anything they don't like it'll be a replay of the first Clinton impeachment.
Meanwhile, of course, she'll cooperate with a lot of the things they want, or at least not fight them whole-heartedly, since she was never really against them the TPP, weaker financial regulations, weaker protections for net neutrality, more surveillance, etc.

(5,198 posts)the potential and possibilities seem endless. Bernie doesn't provide this particular option with such a clear record. Of course with so many secret meetings and speeches, perhaps the deals have already been struck.

(1,674 posts)and we will have a President leading from prison, or house arrest in the white house. She would still be the head snake among the snakes in Congress, unless impeached. So it is vital that we have a moral VP.
However, the likely scenario is once she is elected, the investigation will be voided.
Hillary has always been smart about not being upstaged, so will see to it her VP is a vegetable
