(9,313 posts)No sure where you are getting your numbers, but 28 states so far have had a Democratic primary or caucus that is:
-- Completely open to all registered voters.
-- Open to registered Democrats and unaffiliated voters.
-- Open only to registered Democrats, but voter can change on the same day.
All of the above are effectively "open."
In many states there are as many unaffiliated voters as registered Democrats -- sometimes more. Unaffiliated, aka "independent" (there is no "independent" party registration in any state that I know of). When they can participate, unaffiliated voters constitute a significant demographic. There is very little difference between primaries/caucuses that are open to all and primaries/caucuses that are open to Dem + unaffiliated. So few Republicans or "other" voters participate they do not constitute a significant demographic.
