Alan Simpson reprimanded the extremists in the Republican Party like Rick Santorum and said he was tired of anti-gay people like that.

So perhaps, like Colin Powell, he is one of the last moderate Republicans out there and dislikes what he sees in Deb Fischer. I think in his statement Simpson said that he knows Kerrey has good qualities since he worked with him before when they were both in the Senate together.

From what I recall, Bob Kerrey is more or less a centrist Democrat so Simpson's backing is not surprising, seeing as how Simpson is out of politics and can voice his true opinion without having to toe the Republican line.
